Benelli is making a 3 inch 28 gauge self loader and I believe some of the new O/U 28 gauge shotguns are being chambered for 3 inch 28 gauge shells.Fiocchi is making 3 inch 28 gauge shells.
At some point ,I would like to have a 3 inch 28 gauge gun to use and try out.At present time, the cost of the new 3 inch Benelli is just a bit to much for me.Many of the old school shooters are against the 3 inch 28 gauge. It could be a bit ahead of its time .Lead is still legal in the uplands and target ranges, but I believe in time all lead shot will be banned. With steel being the cheapest non tox shot available and it being less effective than lead, the 3 inch 28 gauge shell could come into its own,as a way to keep the 28 gauge as a useful gauge for field use, when using steel shot.
Even now I have no doubt the 3 inch 28 gauge would be useful for those hunting pheasants with a 28 gauge.Much like the 3 inch adds more shot to the 20 gauge.
As far as it goes ,the only gauge needed now a days is the 12 gauge. There are very light weight 12 gauge guns and ammo available ,as well as heavy guns and loads ,up to the big 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge for duck, and goose hunting. No need for a 10,16,20,28 or 410.The 12 gauge can do it all.Its just nice to be a little different and use something different than what every other fellow is shooting.
The above is just my opinion and you are free to agree or disagree with me ,as you choose.
