I have a pre ‘64 30-30 that is releasing the next cartridge in line in the magazine prematurely and it’s getting jammed under the carrier. I’ve dissassembled it and want to know what the experts think. I should mention that the set screw on the bottom of the link is broken so I had to punch the pin out.
Is the cartridge stop worn?
Build it back up with some weld and file to shape?
Replace the link (good option considering broken screw head)?
Thoughts......

I would get a new link if you can find one of proper vintage that's not also worn out. If you build it up with weld you'll have to harden it somehow or it will just wear down again.

It could be bent, First 38-55 winchester i ever bought , i decided to take apart, that was a mistake, Winchester heat treated to a very high temperature, so high the parts liked to bend and warp , the carrier could be bent out of shape as was the first 38-55 i ever bought. pretty simple fix but definately teaches you that these old winchesters dont need to be taken apart, lesson learned. ever since that rifle i never bother with taking a winchester apart, oil and compressed air is all you need.

Can you elaborate on this for me? Why is the cartridge carrier causing rounds to feed under it? No sarcasm intended, honestly curious. I’ve researched this a bunch and haven’t heard of the carrier being the problem at all.

Not the carrier....the gate that you push in to load a round into the magazine. I have repaired 2 of these 94s which allowed the round to slip under the loading ramp by
replacing the gate. On the first one, I was at a loss after replacing the ramp and the lever with different ones, and no change in the problem.
Had a suggestion from an old timer who said the gate was probably bent a tiny bit, and not holding the cartridge in the magazine. Voila, changed the gate..problem solved.

I totally misread your reply. Sorry.
That makes sense. Thanks for that. I will have a look and see if it’s the problem.

I understand where you're coming from, but I can't agree - every gun I have ever bought is fully stripped, disassembled, examined and reassembled - usually before they are fired, even if they are new. I can't help it, it's a compulsion to see every detail and nuance of the design.
