I have this rifle, in excellent condition. Looks like it was carried a fair bit, but fired very little. Action is buttery smooth and the trigger is crisp.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Worth keeping?

Worth selling?

I don't currently have anything in my stable in this calibre and I do want a good old Springflield.

Could this be the one?

Keep it ........ Owning a 30-06 is never a bad idea.

I've got the rifle and a slough of old hunting ammo with it. Almost 100 rounds. Most look shootable, if a bit tarnished from time.

It's got an old Bushnell scope on it that I'll replace, but I'm curious as to whether I can find a one piece base that will fit an old Savage Long Action.

I'll post pics soon.

Well,

as usual, I've fallen down the rabbit hole. In my ever antagonistic nature to never leave anything well enough alone, I have decided to give this old, well meaning hunting rifle a new lease on life as a precision rig. Lots of modern load data and components for running a 30.06 out fast and far and I have dies and brass, so I'm well on my way. Re-barrelling seems like the next logical step, so I'll be stripping off the stock and sending in the action for a new barrel. Not sure if it's more cost effective to buy a new barrel, or buy a Savage heavy contour barrel in .308WIN and have it re-chambered for 30.06. I've been reading that re-chambering to 30.06 Ackley Improved is the way to go, but I'll have to ask around and see who has the ability to do this and if it makes sense cost wise.

I'm thinking I'll drop this into a chassis, as I won't mind the added weight to soak up a little bit of recoil. There are a few options out there for Savage LA, but MDT looks like the right move.

Trigger and glass will finish it off, so I'm thinking this will be my 2019 project.

I'll update this thread with pics as I go. Maybe have to move this on to the Precision Rifle thread.

Fun times ahead!
