Hello,

I’m sorry if this is the wrong area, but can someone please give me the run down on IVI ammunition?

As in why it’s taboo to be sold?

There’s a local store selling a small number of IVI 5.56 boxes dated in the 1970’s. I think 72 or 73. The ammo looked clean, packed in 90 round paper boxes with French and English warning labels.

Is this stuff any good? / Legal?

Thanks

Military personnel are prohibited from selling government property for personal gain (obviously). Basically, until very recently, the only IVI marked ammo you would find in the civilian market was either re-manufactured or stolen goods. The government had previously asked IVI to refrain from Civilian sales, but things seem to have changed recently. However, lately things seem to have changed.

Basically, there wasn't any IVI dated between the 1980s and 2000s that was available for civilian purchase anywhere. (there are very small lots of 1980s and 90s era stuff that went floating around from the government's civilian marksmanship programs (ORA, etc.), but it's rare as hen's teeth). I don't know if the contracts changed or something/someone gave way, but lately IVI has been showing up in the civilian market again. Mostly in pistol calibers.

Ok thanks. What is this 1970’s stuff for then?

Didn’t Canada use 7.62x51 in the FAL until 1985?

So why the need for 5.56 in the early 70’s?

None of it is really "illegal" just some is very likely to have been stolen. However due to civilian marksmanship and DND sometimes selling stuff to surplus by accident it's not like anyone would get charged for having a few boxes.

...and it's been and being sold in the States, so the ruling of it not allowable here on this site is a little outdated, imho.

IVI sells to the US and has done so since the sixtes.
M193 to the US since Vietnam days.
C77 to the CF.
7.62 since FN days.

They once sold to civis.
They used to have small lots through ORA and such programs.
I know dealers in the US that buy casings by the ton from the CF, so casings are availabe.
As mentioned, they sell the odd batch indirectly though agencies like the donkey wallopers.

What do tyou have?
7.62 or 5.56 and which 5.56? M193 or C77?

Buy it in the US and import it.

I am not sure, boxes are 90 rnds in paper boxes, not on clips.

The QC has taken a nosedive in the last few years. Random fliers and I mean fliers which I attribute to the whole neck hexagonal crimp they switched to.

Lots of squib loads, burns very dirty and the bullet seating depth/ ogive is wonky which causes feeding issues in some pistols, 9mm. Civilian offerings are usually better. Not sure why it's so high in demand from people outside LE/Mil?

Maybe the forbidden fruit syndrome.

I suspect that the demand from 2003 with the War on Terra,
the QC slipped in relation to up-kick in production.

Until then it was one of the best.
Most put it right behind or close to par with RUAG GP90.
