Yukon RCMP and the territory's coroner are investigating a suspected bear attack that left two people dead northeast of Mayo, near the N.W.T. border.

Police say it happened on Monday.

No other details have been reported, and the names of the deceased have not been released.

In a statement, police say Environment Yukon is also involved in the investigation and more information will be released soon.

Rare for a bear to kill two people in one location... I suspect that something went down before the bear got there... unless it broke into a cabin or something of the sort. Will be interesting to hear the details.

as you cant wait for the details. the bears should be in den now (at least black bears and grizzly sows) but we have been hit by a big warm up and berries season was not that big. but we need more details.

That's too bad that it happened, and a bear has attacked and killed two people at the same location. It happened in Algonquin park around 1990

we do not know yet the kind of bear: we have three here polar (a little farther north lol) grizzly and black we do not know yet.

That is terrible... what a horrifying way to go, especially while holding your child and doing your best to protect him/her... very sad for the family.

A Yukon woman and her 10-month-old daughter are dead after a bear attack at a remote cabin, the territory's coroner says.

In a news release, Yukon's coroner says 37-year-old Valerie Theoret, and her daughter Adele Roesholt were found dead by the child's father at around 3 p.m. on Monday.

According to coroner Heather Jones, the two had been alone at the cabin when the attack happened.

"It appears they had been out for a walk when the incident occurred, sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.," the coroner's news release says.

Theoret was on maternity leave from her job teaching Grade 6 French immersion at Whitehorse Elementary School. She and her partner, Gjermund Roesholt, and their daughter had been trapping at Einarson Lake for the last three months, the coroner says.

Roesholt was away from the cabin on the family's trapline when the attack occurred, Jones says. He came back just before 3 p.m. and was immediately charged by a grizzly bear, about 100 metres from the cabin.

Roesholt managed to shoot the bear, killing it. He then went to the cabin, where he found the bodies of his partner and child outside.

He used an emergency beacon device to call for help from the Village of Mayo, a community about 400 km north of Whitehorse.

The coroner is still investigating, along with RCMP and Yukon's department of the environment.

Whitehorse Elementary School officials sent notification of Theoret's death to parents and said there was a support team at the school for staff and students.
