Basically another long vs short comparison.
Im looking to fill a gap in the line up and need a 22 cal for 300 yard plinking and blasting crows and coyotes in wooded areas.
The 223 seems to have every advantage but its just boring. The 221 fireball seems up to the task and has flavor
Anyone using the fireball?

I have a 221 Fireball, but, in a Remington XP-100.

221 Fireball in a contender pistol. Works excellent but for your 300 yard goal even in a rifle I believe you are better with 223 Remington. The round is accurate and easy to reload for.

My XP-100 is scoped and I have a couple of targets here. One a three shot group and the other, a five shot group, both well under 1" and shot off of a rest @ 100yds. It 'seems' to be most fond of a diet of 50gr Hornady V-MAX pushed by IMR 4064. I'd post photos  but I have yet to make alternate arrangements after the  photobucket screw up.

I love seeing what will come out of the woodwork in these "Either or" threads... so I will start the ball rolling... if .223 is "boring," consider a .220 Swift... :)

Hoyt. Im at the point where burning out a barrel is more annoying than a badge of honor. Although a fast twist long throated swift and 22250 did cross my mind. I decided on the .378 bolt face as theres lots of smaller cases i havent played with yet should i get bored

I have had a couple Fireballs, one a Rem 700 classic, she was a beauty and shot very well, liked the 52-53 grain bullets best. Also had one in a Rem XP 100, it was a great little shooter too, but practicality led me to sell it as I couldn't enjoy her accuracy in the field.

I now have a 222 rem in a Sako Vixen, and a 222 Rem Mag in a Rem 700. Both of these are keepers and great shooters too. I am the same as you in regards to the 223, I have one in an AR, but I can't bring myself to own one in a bolt rifle, not my thing.

What is a barrel burner to you? 1000, 2000, 3000 rounds? I have had half a dozen Swifts, two currently, the range gun has 5000 rounds on it and it shoots groups just as tight as when it had 50 rounds on it... barrel maintenance becomes more important as the bore diameter decreases and velocity increases... I guess, how much you will shoot it comes into play... sounds like maybe, just stick with the boring .223.

This will be a a range and farm toy mostly with being a backup incase a buddy doesnt have a coyote gun. We are over run with coyotes down here. It will be shot alot by a couple dozen ppl

:( A point of sadness for me as well, but I haven't found the courage to part with it.

The fact that you would consider a .221 suggests that cartridge availability isn't a big factor in determining your choice. In that vein, a .17 Fireball might prove to be a lot of fun. Once you have a supply of brass, its cheap to shoot, due to the small powder charges barrel life should be pretty good, and the terminal performance of a thin skinned 20 gr bullet at 4000 fps runs to impressive.

Built a 222 a couple of years back and sold it before it got shot

Just bought it back and I am stoked to shoot it in the spring. Barnard, Kreiger, Robertson go trigger, nice

Sorry for the derail but a 22 can be had in a few factory offering s and should be considered, then do a switch barrel for the fireball if you wish. Jeff

I reload so im not worried availability. The 17s get annoying trying to hold those lil bullets before seating after a while lol
While the 17s are great for crows and groundhogs and ive down right flattened a couple coyotes with a 17 mach2 ive found them lacking on coyotes. I had a 17 rem for a short time and had bad experiences with it on coyotes. Now im sure theres better bullet selection now adays. If it wouldnt see use for coyotes id consider it. However the .378 bolt face leaves me open for exploration if i get bored of another 22 cf.
I also have a pair of 250 savage projects in the works which will compete for time in the field

How is a 223 boring compared to a 222? Or fireball? What is meant by boring? 220 swift is cool but why do with a barrel toaster. 204 ruger is fantastical. 223 is a happy medium if you want .22 cal

Have you ever owned and shot a Swift? I'm guessing not.

By boring i mean everyone has one. Theyre very common and lack interest. 223 works fine just doesnt have anything interesting about it
Its like going to baskin robbins and ordering vanilla ice cream

What’s boring for me about 223 is there are 50,000 different rifle in it (or so it seems), 6000 different kinds of ammo, and everyone has one. It’s like a 30-06. It’s everywhere and bland. Does it work? Sure does but it is still boring

Boring because everyone and their dog has a 223 Remington.
The same with 308 and 30-06, everyone has them.
Get something different.
A lot of rounds out there if people want something different.
