You don't want to go back in time, trust me.
Money was hard to come by, and spare money for shooting and hunting was hard to find.

About 1967 Le Baron Sporting Goods where on Queen Street in Toronto . They sold Lee Enfield SNIPER Models , complete
with scope & transit box for $ 99.95 . I remember it well & said these will go up a lot in time. Being in high school I had no spare
$$$ , so could not buy any . At the same time in Simpson Sears Catalog Return Cte. you could buy L-E # 3 for $7.00 .
In those days Toronto was full of gun stores.

What I meant was the sporter was more money.

Exactly...by roughly a third more for the sporter...and now the ratio is about five times the money for an unaltered L-E versus a sporterized one.

So which one is now the bargain?

Anyone noticed the add description of ROYAL Enfield?
Wish I could find a Royal Enfield motorcyle for that price range. :)

Higher prices sporter- you had to pay someone to hack away that clumsy wood and make a useful hunting rifle out of it. There were millions of them on the market.

If you take into account inflation. That $18.95 USD Enfield in 1950 is $209.85 USD in 2018. Back then they were abundant. Now most have been chopped and the remaining originals have gone up to ~$500 USD

Not surprising.

That brings back memories. I bought my first No4 Mk1 for $15.00. I picked it from one of the barrels full of No1's and No4's the surplus store had at the time. IIRC, they had surplus 303 ammo for $0.50/clip of 5 as well.
