Yep. We tried it today and I was amazed. I took my neighbour with me out the Genesee range today. We plinked away on the 25 and 50 meter range for a while, and then went over to the long range (800 meters is the farthest shot if I remember correctly). Anyway, we shot my 30-30 at the 200 meter targets with mixed results. I wasn't expecting miracles from my little model 94 Winchester with a 20" barrel. We ran out of ammo with an hour left before we had to go, so I pulled out my Ruger Redhawk 44 magnum with a 5 1/2" barrel.
The other guys chuckled a bit, as did I, but hey, what the heck, let's see what it'll do.
I was amazed to find myself putting 90% of my rounds to within 3 feet of what I would guess would be an 18" wide gong!!!! Not precision shooting by any means, but not to darned bad for a couple of hacks with a 5 1/2 inch handgun, even if I do say so myself :D LOL!!! I got one of the other fellows who's had a little more experience with 44's to have a go with it. ONE HANDED, STANDING, he was getting the same results my neighbour and I were, and we were using a rest!!! I didn't get his name, but NICE SHOOTING if you hapen to be here on the board:rockOn:
The other thing that surprised me was that I wasn't really correcting the sights much. The bullets were still flying pretty much horizontal with my line of site. From what I've read, they should have been dropping off quite badly after the 100 meter mark. They weren't !!! Also, they were still pitching up a pretty good pile of dust when they hit the backstop. I know this is no test of how much energy they had left at that point, but still, it's sure not like I had to point at the clouds to get them there.......
Anyway, thanks again to Bruce (if you're here) for spotting our shots for us for over an hour at the expense of his own shooting time. Great bunch out there!!!!!

200 meter 44 mag

talk about timing. i just got done working up a load for
my contender with a 14 in barrel in 10 mil auto. i get
1500 fps with 12 gr blu dot and 1600 fps with 16.5 gr
of 2400. this is shootinf a 175 gr cast swc. i get an extra 1/8 of an inch case capacity by
loading long. now tomorow for the acuracy testing. this thing realy rattles the 100and 200 meter gong. i'm ordering a bushnell 2 to 6X scope tomorow. yahooooooo.

for real thrills do it with a MUZZLE LOADER- 200 grain 45 cal slug and about 30 grains of ffg- i've done it with my ruger old army - 250 yards and about 15 degrees of elevation- you use binocs and an observer to call the rounds in and that's off hand

I used to have a TC Contender in 357 Mag.
From the Creedoor position (lying on your back, with kneesfolded up a bit, and gun resting along side your calf) I could knock down the rams at 200M fairly regularly.
It is really neat to fire the shot, a slight moment later the target starts to move, then you hear the clank a bit after that.

Well, if Jeff hadn't sold me such a cheap junky gun, we would have been smacking the gong with every shot!!! LOL!!!!!
Just kidding of course :D
Yep, I'm having a great time with it. The reloading press is on the way. Can't wait. There's some serious shooting to be done once it becomes a little more affordable to feed it!!!

Besides having fun with the hand cannon, we were also able to confirm that the scope on my 30-30 is dead. I was beginning to doubt myself. At 200 meters, cranking the left/right more than a full turn(I have no idea how many clicks that is, but it's a heck of a lot) did nothing :) Time to go to the toy store!!!

For me there it doesn't get much better than shooting handguns at long range objects like gongs or rocks. It is amazing to see such things regularly hit at hundreds of yards with a good sixgun, load and shooter. Here's one of my favorite 44's for such games.

And here's one (a 38 WCF) in the works with two gold bars in the front sight to help with consistent holdover for those long shots.

Nice! Very very nice!! I have a .44 'Flat top' with factory Ruger stag horn grips that I don't shoot enough. I'll have to cure that problem.;)

757, thats crazy! nice work...

I've gotta try out my .44 SBH for some long range stuff, just completed it recently with some accuracy upgrades so I've been dialing it in at the range. 50 meters with awesome accuracy so far, time to hit the rifle range for a 210 meter gong shoot on video :D

if i can hit 250 with an old army and group with irons, you can too- the only difference is the bloack powder thing- other than that, it's the same gun

You guys need an instructor,if I had a pistol with a bent barrel I might for sure miss the first shot(you said you could see where the shots were hitting)!

But after the secound shot I would know where to aim for the third shot!

Think of artillery same as shooting clays, you move the pistol to where you want it to hit,not where you aim!

It's good clean fun anyway you look at it,just costs you more till you learn the tricks!

Bob:)

Oh yes forgot to remind you that that junky little mod 94 30/30 has more energy at 100 yards than the .44 Rem Mag at the muzzel!

The 30/30 is a mighty beast killer large and small, don't sell it short!

Bob:D

how many PISTOLS do you see in 30/30?- we're going after long range HANDGUN accuracy-which is a lot harder than using a RIFLE- and most of us CAN AND DO hit on the second shot- one ranging and the second is fire for effect
