Yep. We tried it today and I was amazed. I took my neighbour with me out the Genesee range today. We plinked away on the 25 and 50 meter range for a while, and then went over to the long range (800 meters is the farthest shot if I remember correctly). Anyway, we shot my 30-30 at the 200 meter targets with mixed results. I wasn't expecting miracles from my little model 94 Winchester with a 20" barrel. We ran out of ammo with an hour left before we had to go, so I pulled out my Ruger Redhawk 44 magnum with a 5 1/2" barrel.
The other guys chuckled a bit, as did I, but hey, what the heck, let's see what it'll do.
I was amazed to find myself putting 90% of my rounds to within 3 feet of what I would guess would be an 18" wide gong!!!! Not precision shooting by any means, but not to darned bad for a couple of hacks with a 5 1/2 inch handgun, even if I do say so myself
LOL!!! I got one of the other fellows who's had a little more experience with 44's to have a go with it. ONE HANDED, STANDING, he was getting the same results my neighbour and I were, and we were using a rest!!! I didn't get his name, but NICE SHOOTING if you hapen to be here on the board
The other thing that surprised me was that I wasn't really correcting the sights much. The bullets were still flying pretty much horizontal with my line of site. From what I've read, they should have been dropping off quite badly after the 100 meter mark. They weren't !!! Also, they were still pitching up a pretty good pile of dust when they hit the backstop. I know this is no test of how much energy they had left at that point, but still, it's sure not like I had to point at the clouds to get them there.......
Anyway, thanks again to Bruce (if you're here) for spotting our shots for us for over an hour at the expense of his own shooting time. Great bunch out there!!!!!
