Hunting Permission: Let’s talk Price

No, Saskatchewan is not the only Province prohibiting payment for access to hunting. Alberta also prohibits such payment.

I'm having some problem with Umchorn2 position - pay me or I'll rape and pillage the wildlife habitat. So much for "stewards of the land."

I believe in permission for hunting access to private lands, and have always asked. I do not think that this is the real intent of proposed new legislation in Saskatchewan.
Political posturing without real change to policing and suppression of rural theft is unhelpful.

Sale of hunting or shooting rights prohibited
27 No person shall, directly or indirectly, sell, trade or barter or offer for sale, trade
or barter the hunting or shooting rights over any land.
1950, c.76, s.26; R.S.S. 1953, c.323, s.27.

You are absolutely correct... but you can absolutely still give someone a gift. The fact that I give a gift of whiskey does not constitute payment. I already have permission. I've already hunted. I will also usually deliver some deer jerky after processing too... and you can't sell game meat. I'm not selling it, I'm gifting it.
In fact, most cases, I help put a dent in said bottle of whiskey when I deliver the jerky.

OP, maybe you should rent your land out as recreational property. It can be left natural and will provide some income. You might even be able to get permission from the renter to watch the wildlife.

Gifting in return for permission is illegal.

The resolution presented by SARM was aimed specifically at hunters.

I just read in a different thread that some hunters from quebec bring you maple syrup every year. It's in the same spirit.

I can hunt whether I give whiskey or jerky or not... I have a good relationship with the landowners who let me hunt their land. It is not to earn the right to hunt, it is not payment. It is maintaining a relationship over years and years. Those same farmers come in and do business with me every year too. I have discussed this at length with a CO that hunts with me once in a while. I expense the bottle of whiskey for income tax too as a matter of fact... that ought to really get you going now lol

The Quebec boys didn't hunt on my land, they preferred wildlife lands. They gave me maple syrup for use of my heated shop and tractor.

Lol. We both know what you are doing but if that's what helps you sleep at night, fine.

I wonder what else your hunting buddy CO is willing to overlook.

I've never paid for hunting permission, and I doubt that I ever will.

For the two lots of property that i have permission on, which are adjacent, I just help the farmer where I can, and I humbly thank him. When scouting, checking cams, laying feed, etc, Me and my friend just take a little bit of extra time and patrol the property, check the fences, look for trespassers, maintain signs, clear trails, just general odds and ends stuff that keep up appearances that the property is well maintained and appearing more occupied than it otherwise would be.

The land owner asked that we take Does as the priority, and we are happy to oblige.
This year he has asked us to see what we can do for coyotes as well, because the local population is ticking up and he wants to keep it in check to protect his cows. Not something we would normally be into, but we are going to have a go at it. Its a good relationship, and everyone is happy.

I would feel less inclined to do that work if I had to pay for access, and the farmer needs the chores done far more than he needs money I would pay him, and this is something we both understand. Its a good relationship.

I'm not trying to convince myself that what I'm doing is right... I sleep a-ok about it all... this conversation is ongoing because you are trying to convince me that what I'm doing is wrong or illegal or unethical. There are gift rules for politicians, for RCMP, for CO offices.... the cost of a bottle of whiskey is well underneath everyone else's rules. I'm not buying anyone $1,000 scotch here... I buy a $50 bottle of crown or gibsons. I will continue to do so year after year. I also buy an bottle for the buddy who comes with me and helps with the gutting and skinning, we hang it in his shop. Are you going to tell me that buying him a bottle makes him a paid outfitter now too?

It's a gift... there are still kind people in this world.

Not illegal for your buddy to receive payment for help or use of his garage for any reason, so not an outfitter.

Your "gift" giving is centered around hunting on their property. That is illegal, no exemptions.

If a Saskatchewan whitetail outfitter can operate on public land, charge 6000 a week for a baited stand, a bed and something to eat and a ride, why can't the farmer on the other side of the road offer the same hunt on private land? Cut that in half for bears. If anything there should be less conflicts with the locals because unlike the outfitter who acts like he owns the place the farmer actually does. Everyone is still free to take it or leave it.

that is absolutely wrong. Your making all kinds of assumptions that from what he said are incorrect.
you absolutely can give someone a gift.
Christmas must be a riot at your house

It is not illegal to give or to accept a gift as a thank you. It is illegal to demand anything of value. FYI I have on more than one occasion hunted with a CO and carried on with the practice of gifting a bottle.

Here is his first post. A "gift" as a thank-you for what?

Paying for hunting will be the death of the sport here in Canada for sure unless of course you're rich or aboriginal. I couldn't afford to be paying $1000.00 per day to hunt so I guess I'd just have to read about it at the library and enjoy it that way.

No use joining any wildlife organizations either - what would be the point?

Might as well delete the hunting forum on this website as well - what would be the point?

No point in selling hunting and fishing gear either. Who's going to buy it?
