Well isn't that a crappy thing.

Sometimes I hate loading my .204 Ruger. Like today.

Get all set up. 500 brass is all wet tumbled, dried, then placed in a nice little oiled sack for some needed lubrication.

THE VERY FIRST FRIGGIN CASE breaks my Lee decapper.

That's okay. I know when to stop (no spare decapper either)

I would not lock it down as tight next time the balance is getting it just tight enough not to slide other wise it gets broken

I did an autopsy. It would appear the fault lies with me. I deburr and clean flash holes, looks like i made a curl in the brass. crap crap crap.

In my next life I will design a better decapper lol. Or the loose nut behind the press.

I broke one on my 6.5x55, like you I never had a spare...
Now I have lots of spares :)
In my case I had some European brass which (unknown to me at the time) use a smaller flash hole, smaller than the pin..
Now that I know to check and uniform those holes it’s a non issue.
Waiting for the new pins/mandrels to arrive though is like watching a pot waiting for it to boil, lol...

ok, this makes me feel better. which vendor stocks them?

I've done it before after wet tumbling.

Guess what was stuck in the flash hole?

Let them dry for a full day, put them in an old towel folded over & shaken like there's no tomorrow, then use your big-arsed ss pin magnet & pass them over your cases.

Oh yeah, remove your decapping pin as you should be decapping as a separate step.

NONE of the above will ensure nothing is in the empty case; it just cuts down the odds of having it.

BTW, would you rather F@#% up a decapping pin, or squeeze a stainless steel pin into your bore after not finding one, then shooting a round with one or more pins inside.

My $0.02 worth.

I guess my decapper setup works okay after all. I use the handheld pin and base for all my decapping. Maybe a bit slower, but I get to find any bad primer pocket and flashholes.

FL i think

I was only wondering as years ago I was going to get a lee universal decapping die but if memory serves their die does only .22 and up. I wound up with a Redding kit I got from Prophet River that has a large and small decapper for standard and sub calibers.

I deprime all my brass with the decapping die prior to cleaning. Then clean and dry cases. Then size, FL or NK depending. This keeps my loading dies cleaner and if pins get in the flash holes they’re easier to see/notice.

I have a Lyman universal depriming die and deprime, tumble then size the cases. This keeps the cases and dies cleaner and far less chance of scratching the die and cases.

If you have any semi-autos that throws perfectly good brass away that lands on the ground tumbling first is a good idea. I can't tell you how many times I ended up with embedded grit inside my .223 sizing die from my AR15 rifles.

I also have a backup and have a simple Lee depriming tools that come with their Lee loader. The funny part is after I bought spare pins I never broke another pin for any of my dies.

Bottom line, having a backup depriming die or tools will not stop the sizing and loading operations.

Ha ha it happens I broke one early on but learned my lesson did not happen again and now have a backup plan if needed
