What holster to use for Production and Production Optics

I would like to find a holster that would work for both divisions so it needs to have room for the optics. Also it is my understanding that the rules for holsters in Production for USPSA is different than IPSC. Ideally it would be legal for both if there is a difference in the rules.

One last question, recommendations for after market mags for the Shadow 2. I've heard Tanfo's are better then the Mecgar mags that CZ sends with their guns but are they worth it and why are they better?

The bladetech OWB Classic I use in USPSA production worked great when I added an optic on my Tanfoglio Stock II for USPSA Carry Optics. No modification required. They'd work for IPSC too.

For USPSA, you can't have a race holster or magnets in production.

Since the optic is mounted in place of the rear sight. Most holsters should work.

I still need to make time to make my USPSA rig.........
Not able to use race holster is not a big issue. It changes the draw a little, but can be adapted.
Not able to use magnets is a big thing to me.

+1 for the Bladetech. I wanted something for both USPSA and Canada. It's not a race holster, but it's compliant with both rulesets and it doesn't slow down my already glacial draw/first shot.

Eventually I’ll get a race holster for IPSC Production but for now I’ll be using Bladetech. All this year I’ve used a DAA PDR Pro II and I wouldn’t recommend it. Mine didn’t fit my gun even though it was specifically for it, it takes 3 different sized Allen keys to adjust, and at least for my body unless you adjust it all the way in it puts the gun more than 50mm away making it not legal for IPSC. Neat idea but poor execution in my opinion.

The Boss hanger with unicorn holster from the Ben Stoeger Pro Shop is what I would use. A stiffer body than the bladetechs, with the best belt hanger out there. Basically infinitely adjustable, and also stiff.

If you are using a pistol cut for optics the Optic mounting plate could interfere with the inside edge of the holster. My Soley Canadian holster was made for the PPQ Match. Tim had to take down a small part of the edge to allow the base plate for the Optic to clear the holster. I think, had the Optic been mounted in a dovetail mouth, the Optic mounting plate likely would have cleared the rear edge of the standard holster. Each design is a bit different. Something to watch for.

Bladetech, Redhill tacktical, or new Ben Stoeger holster with a stiff solid hanger like BOSS hanger is the way to go. I see no advantage of race holster for production division. I had many race holsters and I have replaced all of them with bladetech or redhill tacktical holsters.

Not sure if you can use the drop for Single Stack in USPSA but other than that I use them for my Limited\Standard gun in both USPSA and IPSC with no issue.

Ahh, you know what -- When I inquired about the RHT holster I was also asking about the drop. Makes sense as I believe the butt had to be above the belt line. Maybe I'll look at a RHT in the future.

As one of our IDPA shooters reminds me on occasion, "the draw Bob is vastly over rated". I only shoot club IPSC shoots now and this observation may not be Canada wide but locally most IPSC start positions I have shot require some movement before you are in a position to shoot. This allows the shooter ample time to draw his/her firearm in most cases. If that is common then the need for an open style speed holster would seem to be moot.

I know my draw times difference between a dropped and offset holster vs a standard belt holster I use in IDPA is minuscule. I would think a secure pouch holster might at least have the advantage of reducing the possibility of dropping the gun by accident. Over the last four years I have seen a new revolver and a new Shadow2 dropped on cement at our range from open style holsters when the shooter thought he/she had secured his/her pistol when he/she had not. In each case they were IPSC Production shooters. AFAIK one has since bought a pouch holster. For B,C and D class shooters I wonder if it is really worth moving away from a standard belt holster. I have never seen a handgun drop from a standard pouch style holster be it a dropped and offset or mounted with the guns grip above the belt.
