My first try with these. And I am impressed. $12.99 /50 at Russels Calgary
And Hornady website has them at $16.04 US

Anyhow, I like the Vital shocks as well, however I found the 20 grain XTP pack a wallop on gophers. After shooting 1000 rounds all of mixed brands, I think I like these.

Warning Gore shot.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From 25yards head on... My god, it turned this rodent inside out!!!
One shot no body manipulation.

Some amazing carnage from an amazing cartridge.

Alas this might be the last of gopher shooting this year. Fields are getting very high and even this newly planted field I swear grew 1" by the time we left.Lots of fresh badger sign but Mr. Badger was a no show.

Cheers

Is that from a 17hmr? I was using 17gr vmax a few days back and didnt get that messy. Is that the general aftermath of the 20gr xtp?

In a word... yes
Any solid hit made massive damage. This gopher was a bit on the extreme scale. I found the damage from a ballistic tip to the hollow point less messy.
The hollow point 20 gr made a distictive loud pop on every hit and damage was always extreme.

I've had some pretty explosive results with the .17gr VMAX ones as well. As long as you hit something hard (hit a skunk while he was climbing a wall, right in the spine between the shoulder blades) it blows it right up. If you just get tissue, it still expands nice, but doesn't fold em inside out.

I haven't tried the 20gr's on coons or skunks yet, but maybe soon.

That's AWSOME!:dancingbanana:
Years ago I went "Prairie Doggin'" in Montana, and had a lot of results like that.
We called it "sh*t bagging" cause if you looked close in the general area you could see bits of it kind of sprayed around...
Of course we were using a .22-250, and a 7MM08, as well as a few .22lr's and a couple of .22WMR's.
That is very impressive for such a tiny bullet!

Is this a Marlin 917VSF? Cause I'm plaining in buying one and would like to know what you think of theses babies...

Yes it is a 917vsf and I love it!
It is a very accurate amazingly powerful fun rifle to shoot and it looks great IMO.
It sure impresses people when out at the gopher patches, since many people are still unfamilar with the .17 HMR and its capabilities.

I say buy it! You'll love it.

My experience on gophers with the 20 gr hornady xtp was it just poked holes in them. Still made a good pop sound but i saw a few able to drag themselves to the holes etc. but the 17 gr hornady v-max was the destructive round that blew em up and flipped them. Have been shooting gophers with .17 hmr for about 5 yrs now and thats my experience with the rounds. I only shot the xtp's for one day but i shot quite a few, i stick to the v-max as its much more fun than the xtp for me.

hmmm I'm thinking I should go try my buddies 17, I wouldn't have expect that much damage. My 22 can make a big hole in the exit wound, but only my 223 can split them like that... of course with the 223 the head is usually a meter or two removed from it's a$$.

Mueller APV 4.5-14 AO and I like it for hunting. Its a little underpowered for serious paper punching . But I don't do much of that.:D
