I recently bought an old remington 1100 for a project. I've never had a semi auto shotgun and have read there is an O ring gas seal, when I opened this one up the O ring seems to be made of metal, its some sort of metal split ring, does this sound right?

Theres a metal 2 pc split ring ( what you are talking about ) But on top of that, there should be a rubber O ring.. Well thats how it is on my Rem 1100.

The O ring generally sits inside a detent on the mag tube. Sometimes they get stuck in the barrel ring. Sounds like yours is gone altogether. Google the 1100 for take down diagrams. The O ring is rubber like.

cheers Darryl

Here is a picture of the metal ring, it was sitting in the groove on the mag tube where I expected to find a rubber O-ring.

1100 O-ring

Early 1100's used a metal seal ring rathee than an o-ring. You can replace the metal seal with an o-ring, which works much better. O-rings are available from remington dealers, or you can use an ordinary rubber o-ring from your local hardware store, Just find one that fits in the groove on your magazine tube.

X2. I just use plain old automotive o-rings. I've never had a problem with cycling the action.

Go to a Hydraulic Supply store and ask for this:

Viton O Ring #21 ("Viton" being the construction material and , "#21" is the size)

It's the same as the Remington Factory Ring and MUCH higher quality than the automotive ones. They should be somewhere between $0.25-$0.50 each. They are heat resistant and chemical resistant. The automotive ones or the plumbing ones are neither.

Just don't tell them what you are using it for or you might find the price skyrockets.

Well I finally got around to testing the gun, looks like the steel gas seal works fine. I shot a box of remington slugs, I have to say I'm really surprised at how light the recoil was. Last time I fired these out of an old single shot they brought tears to my eye's, took about a week for my shoulder to feel better.
