I'm cleaning up an old rusty receiver, by the time I'm done the serial number will no longer be legible.
It is hard to read the number now, do I just leave it or restamp?

The lawman says:

Tampering with Markings
The following provision is not in force.
5 (1) No person shall knowingly remove, alter, obliterate or deface a marking on a firearm.

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a public agent acting in the course of their duties or for the purposes of their employment.

To me the only risk would be that re-stamping could be interpreted as an "alter"-ation.

I don't consider it to be an alteration personally. If you were asking me, I'd just say to get good pictures of the serial number before and after to a drive somewhere. If you were ever called on it, you could prove that you were supporting the legibility of the markings, and not altering them in any way.

Also, the likelihood of any CFO or RCMP calling you on it, I would think your chances of winning the lottery somewhat better.

Are you talking restricted or not, restricted you have to have the number, I have re stamped a couple, and re engraved one of two with a diamond bit in the dremial, engraver depending on the type , size, some old shot gun, I would do it if it had one, some never had one.
I might add that I am a verifier, don't know that if that would make any difference, Different CFO's in different areas seem to have different ideas on everything
I would just redo it , have you seen some of the serial numbers on some of the D.Arms NP27's, you need a glass to see them. Sold a bunch, and all the same.

You can probably guess my feelings on the matter. I have always been very fond of the concept of "don't ask, don't tell."

I like it when they never had a serial number and you can stamp what you want...

This was registered under the previous long gun registry.

That is Awesomeness right there!
I wanna copy and use that serial number for a new signature line?
May I use it guntech?
Rob

sure...

it was a unique number dating the stamping to Dec 14 (1214) 2002 (02) , the first (01) stamped that day with a message in the middle. There were many registered with similar numbers.

As much as I like the sentiment, having that git's name on my property would not sit right. Sorta like getting a tattoo of an ex's face on oneself. A hated ex.

I knew a guy that had a portrait of his wife tattooed on him, she left him at some point in the marriage. He went and got scope crosshairs tattooed over her face lol.

That looks very well done. What did you use to stamp it? Any tips for us if we do something similar....not that I recommend it.

Tape (masking tape) a piece of steel measuring tape to the barrel. Place the edge of the stamp on the edge of the tape. If you are right eyed and right handed stamp right to left (backwards) sighting down the edge of the stamp for spacing. A little practice goes a long way..

I have a polymer non-restricted shooter with a blank serial number metal plate insert. I suspect they put it in upside down. Schrodinger's serial, I have to remove the serial number to read it...

And make sure all the letters and numbers are right side up. Looks like crap when up turn one wrong way, I know.
