Depends on provincial regulations. Mostly across the board it’s five rounds in a mag. I come from a time when ARs were just a rifle and 20 rd mags were common to use on varmints. Chances are a fish cop will say it’s prohibited according to the firearms act. Not too many are familiar with bulletin 72. Check your regs.

I'm not aware of any regs (in BC) that limit the magazine capacity for a centerfire rifle (or rimfire) as it applies to hunting. Shotguns yes...... rifles no.

can anyone show this in black and white from regulations?
generally, the firearms act applies when it comes to magazine restrictions so I would say YES, take it hunting , if the magazine is not a prohibitted device , which a pistol mag is not.

The fact is as pointed out most police and conservation officers don't really understand the finer points of the law. So why deal with the BS if you don't have to, just use a 5rnd, how many times do you need to shoot that deer anyways.

In Alberta, where I was born and raised It is unlawful to:

set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:
ammunition of less than .23 calibre,
ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets,
an auto-loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine,

BC is even more restricted: (Page 17, section Firearms)

It is unlawful to use a firearm that is designed, altered or intended to be aimed
and fired by the action of one hand
or
that has a barrel less than 305 mm in
length.

It is unlawful to hunt or trap with a rifle using a full metal jacketed non-expand-
ing bullet, or a tracer, incendiary, or explosive bullet.

It is unlawful to hunt or trap with a shotgun using a tracer or incendiary shot
shell.

It is unlawful to hunt or trap with a set gun or with a pump, repeating or auto
loading shotgun unless the magazine contains a plug that is incapable of holding
more than 2 cartridges. Where the use of a shotgun is allowed for hunting or
trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun holding more than 2 cartridges and firing
single projectiles only (slugs) may be used.

A muzzle loader containing powder and shot in the barrel but unprimed (i.e.,
no powder in the pan of a flint lock or no cap in the nipple of a percussion lock)
is not considered a loaded firearm under the Criminal Code (Canada)

So check your local regs

I know the incidences of animal attacks are low among hunters , but they happen.
For myself, I have hunted with my custom enfield and it's 10 round magazine and while I've rarely needed more than 1 bullet from the magazine..... there was one encounter where I was sure glad I had that rifle. 12+ wolves at close quarters in a small densely wooded draw. Have also had multiple close quarter bear encounters in the same area and a few times more than one bear.
The only draw back I see with using a rifle capable of having a 10 round magazine is simply weight.
anyone who tries to bring hunting ethics into the discussion is seriously misguided LOL

I am related to hunters in the Kootenays in BC (big Grizzly country) that along with their hunting rifle also carry either a large calibre revolver (by permit) or a 12 gauge, fully loaded with slugs for personal protection. There is a penalty in weight. However, they use horses to pack their gear into the backcountry. This is my Personal Protection Weapon, and this is my Hunting weapon, the two are not interchangeable.

Thanks for the info gents, and the NS info RAConnol ,as mainly thats where I will be using it, some in SK. The first coyote goes down with the first shot, but its that second and third that running away.....1+5 will do it. I'm not one to be looking over my back. Wheres the rivet gun.
