20” Stag-10 in 6.5CM

So I’m toying with the idea of either building a Stag-10 with a 20” Faxon barrel and 3-15x Vortex PST II scope

OR

Build a 24” R700 5R Gen 2 in Magpul pro chassis with same scope as mentioned above.

Now I know these are both very different platforms with different purposes.

The R700 will be more accurate and have greater range.

My question is for 6.5CM shooters:

Will I be able to reach out to 800-1000 yards with a 20” 6.5CM or am I taking the legs out from under the cartridge by going to a 20” barrel from a 24” barrel?

From 24" to 20" you lose about 100fps on average, which out at the longest range of 1000yrd will result in an additional 36" of drop, I'm not sure about when it breaks the subsonic barrier.

You'll always benefit more from a longer barrel, velocity-wise. It all depends on your intended purpose and what set of compromises you want to deal with. If you generally plan to shoot longer range, might as well go with the longer barrel. If you're looking for a more compact rifle but want to occasionally shoot longer ranges, go for the 18.6 or 20. Do some research and see what kind of speeds people are getting with the different barrel lengths and then run the numbers and see where you'd go transonic. A 20" barrel will definitely get you to 1000 yards though. For my purposes, I compromised on a 22" barrel in 6.5 as I didn't want it to be too long but regularly get to shoot out to just sub-1000 yards.

Difference is marginal at best.

Real world performance between a 24 and 20 inch 6.5 creed (142 smk) is 0.6 mils(elevation) and 0.1 mil of wind.

Go for the stag 10 build. Fun as hell, as accurate than a rem####.

Thanks for the input. I guess 20” it is!
