question about AR pistols

i didn't know it was possible to run an AR without the buffer tube like this one

shorter bolt carrier, reciever block, for a carbon 15...
anybody have any info on this?

also, who carries handguards like this style?

maybe its a .22lr conversion that has .22 rounds feeding out of the inside of a 5.56nato mag? I'm curious also....

I know it's something to do with the tube on top (it's not the gas tube).

As mentioned I've only seen this done to a regular AR with the ciener kit which operated sans buffer spring and tube.

It is an Olympic Arms product that has the recoil spring in the tube over the barrel.

Handguards are for 7" shorty barrels.

Note that the bolt carrier is cut down. It is gas operated and the spring is in the tube on top.

ah yeah, thinking back, all the pistols with the block and no tube were .22 conversions (it was late...)
so the only option would be a shorty buffer similar to this?
