First long(actually middle) range rifle?

Less than $1000. Not sure what your gunsmith will charge, but it shouldn't be $400. With a 308 your barrel life expectancy is about right.

Thank you.

One of the dealer told me I can order the factory barrel from Tikka, but it takes about 6-8 months, not sure if that's true. Haven't seen any places selling factory barrel yet.

If the barrel+labour is about $6-800 for every 2-3 years, that's still manageable I guess. Don't think I would be shooting during winter time that much or at all.

I have a Tavor X95 already, looking for something bigger and longer distance before the Tavor 7.

Having Tikka T3X Tac A1 308/6.5 in mind, but haven't decided which caliber to go as I am not pro and wouldn't shoot over 500yard for a while. So had a thought about Stag 10 .308 to fill in for the short term.

A bolt-action .223 is a completely different beast than your Tavor, paired with some of the heavier A-Max/ELD or Sierra bullets in Federal and Hornady ammo it's easily capable of 1000. But...

I'd go for the .308 to start with, plenty of cheaper offerings for ammo that's capable of offering accuracy <500, no need to pay for the heavier offerings at those distances.

Make sense.

I'd go with a tikka. The action is smooth and the trigger is pretty good out of the box. I went with the 20" barrel length ctr in 308 and haven't been disappointed. That being said I have put it in a krg bravo stock, installed an aftermarket trigger spring and have an aftermarket trigger on the way. The factory set up was pretty good but I have trouble leaving things alone.

I haven't found myself limited by the 20" barrel yet and have shot and made consecutive hits out to 800m once I figured out the wind.

Skip the tac a1. Get a t3 ctr. Put on a nice nightforce shv f1 optic on. And practice. When you feel ready to join the ai world come on up.

I was thinking about AI initially, but thought the cost is too high to begin with.

Is T3 CTR no longer in production?

I am thinking about Kahles, Zeiss or S&B for scope.

You better pony up good money for kahles or s&b. And have a couple good examples in the ee. But they are worth every penny. Zeiss is more hunter oriented but i have had good experiemce with their conquest hd5 scopes.

To my knowledge the ctr is still in production.

This is a good discussion! I'm in the same position just a smaller budget, 1k rifle and scope.

Raise that budget. Thats the price of an acceptable scope. You can get a decent rifle for not much money. Don't skimp on the glass.

Why not a budget package for close range stuff in the 100 to 500 meter category.

My first long distance rig came in at under $1000 all in,,, my second unit topped off at $1500 ish,,, the third came in at $5000 ish.

All of them shoot pin holes "if" I buckle down,,, much easier to do with the land cannons of course.

My Forth unit came in at $1200 that fits into the 900 meter TR competions "stock division",,, the rifle and I might not pull off a team national win,,, and that's not saying that it can't be done.

A father and son showed up at our F Class shoot 2 years ago with factory 308's to compete in the Stock Class,,, they actually scored pretty good over all being it was their first time in compation.

Factory rifles out of the box with $500 optics.

About the same cost as my TR unit.

Huuuuuuuum, who would thuck that a mid priced set-up could shoot that good at those ranges.

Don't over think it, buy in at your budget,,, then up grade when the time comes.

Some pretty frugal prices on used optics these days.

Just my 2 cents

If on a budget always buy used. I own firearms about a tier or two in cost more than I can afford because I keep a sharp eye on the EE. Great deals come up fairly often.

Saving money very hard for the scope. From my understanding, a reasonable good one would be around $4,000 or even more.

One of the professional told me S&B is not as good as before now, even it is still a decent scope, but it needs some upgrade, so he suggested Kahles to me.

Is this the T3 CTR you are talking about?

Kahles is great, S&B is still awesome, it's just that others have caught up to them. $4k is alot, if you keep your eye out on the EE, you could easily find a really good scope for $2k+. The Vortex Razor Gen 2 lines are great. I think I saw someone selling a Razor AMG with rings for like $2500 not too long ago which was a wicked deal I would have snatched up if I needed one.

I definitely do not feel underscoped with my Razor gen ll 4.5-27x56.
Not the best, but still, very clear with nice turrets.
It's weak point is it's heavy weight if that's an issue.

Seen a few sub 3K on the EE lately, definitely lot's of bang for buck if you can snatch one for 2800$.

Good budget glass that will suit you can be had for much less than $4K.

Athlon Cronus, Delta Strker, Bushy HDMRIIs.

You can shoot just as well with those as the Tier 1 scopes. They are not as nice but a corvette keeps up with a ferrari on the track even though its interior is not as nice.

And Nikon glass as well, they have good warranty and frugal priced,,, a $550 Cnd fund 3-12x42 was my first 1000 to 1700 meter optic.

They have a nice click dial or range finding reticle,,, glass is very clear for the price,,, and Nikon has a good name in optics.

I've switched to Vortex & Sightron since then,,, but my Nikon is my go to hunting scope.

Excellent low light clarity is the reason for its application.
That and the distant ranging reticle.

Ha,,, I deffinatly put it through its paces,,, lots of battle scares and it's still going strong,,, I ain't giving up on it till I run over it with the tractor to make sure it's as tuff as they claim. LOL.

Yuppers, lots of options to choose from, eggs in one basket,,, or lots of eggs spread out over a time frame.

1000'a of ways to find something that will work.

Lots of glass options out there as these guys have mentioned. The Delta Stryker is a great value, and there is a new Athlon Ares ETR that is very highly reviewed and even cheaper than the Delta. I have an Ares BTR (which is the model below the new ETR) and I'm quite happy with it for the money.

For the $1k rifle and optic budget... that's a tight one. Remington 783 on a boxing day sale and a Falcon M18+ would be my pick. I have a Falcon S8i and Falcons are great for the money, but definitely not in the same league as the options that have been mentioned in the last few posts.

Thats the rifle. One big positive if you save and get that scope you can just move it to the ai or whatever premium gun you get in the future.

As mentioned. Check the ee. Couple of nice s&bs on there for a good price. I wouldnt say they have fallen. More like they arent as far ahead of the competition as they used to be.
