In my next round of Brownells orders I'll be getting a hand guard and adjustable gas block and some other odds and ends. As I'm new to building AR-ish rifles, I don't have any idea what kind of adjustable gas block to get, clamp on, solid? I need to get one that's 0.875 as that the size at the gas port on the barrel I'm getting (Proof) and I've been looking at the Superlative Arms one. I like the idea that it vents the excess gas forward and also that the adjustable port is accessed from the front. Anybody have any experience with this gas block or other suggestions? Also, I'd like my hand guard to just cover the gas block, is the inner diameter of most handguards enough to clear a gas block like that or are they all different? From what I can see from the barrel drawing, a 15" handguard should cover the gas block. Any help appreciated!

Superlative arms is a good choice. Clamp on vs set screw gas block I feel doesn't really matter. 15 inch should cover the gas block. With 0.875 you should be ok with most handguards.

You can always compare the inner diameter of the handguard you choose vs length of the gas block to make sure you clear.

12” hand guard will end just before the gas block, 13.5” will just cover a gas block with rifle length gas tube.

I’ve had good luck with SLR rifleworks & Superlative Arms gas blocks. Clamp on is the way to go.

I went 15.5" handguard so I would have a reasonable sight radius with irons.
using a superlative arms adjustable. I didn't know which one to get so went with the set screw version. I'm sure it will not be an issue.

Set screw version has not been an issue for me, have 3 of SLR's.

I'm of the mindset that I want to limit excess gas to the bcg and use the rest of the gas to propell the bullet.

Can some one please explain how the Superlative "venting" gas block works and what it's advantages are?

Then you don't want the Superlative. On the bleed settings, there will be some loss in velocity because that gas is being vented out of the gas block rather than being forced either down the tube or constrained to the barrel.

What hand guard did you go with, Thomas? No prob clearing the gas block? I'll be running backup irons on mine as well.

So what is the advantage to the Superlative system then?

Superlative arms' blocks have two settings. Starting from when the screw is all the way turned in, it cuts the gas flownwithout venting, like any other gas block. If you crank it open all the way, that's max venting and you can close it up from there. Somewhere in the middle is where the vent starts to open.

Bleeding excess gas rather than keeping it in the system can supposedly lessen felt recoil, but I can't speak to that. Guess it also means you're blasting less gas into the gas tube so you'll have a marginally cleaner receiver over the course of a few thousand rounds.

Probably pairs nicely when using a suppressor but otherwise I don't see the point.

JP signature MKIII 15.5" on the one rifle and 15" Diamondhead VRS -T .308 H on the other.
From what I gather it should clear no problem but I do not have my barrels yet.

edit.... I went with the adjustable bleed of gas system due to going with non standard calibers..... 338 fed and 7mm 08 and all my research into reliable rifles in this platform (ar-10) led me to the superlative adjustable units.
