I saw that the Calgary Africa Hunting Show has morphed into the Calgary International Hunting Expo (on Facebook), being held January 25-27, 2019, and that SCI Calgary is holding their fundraising dinner and auction on the Saturday of the Expo weekend. They are also auctioning off the donations via the Online Hunting Auction website. Their dinner tickets are $90 and that includes admission to the Expo.

I wonder if there will be protests?

I think it's easy to explain. Most outfitters come to North America for marketing in January, attend SCI Reno and Dallas Safari Club, which are held the two weekends before Calgary's Expo. Some outfitters stay on for the other large shows such as Houston, WSF Sheep Show, Salt Lake and Harrisburg. The rest head home, and some of those are willing to stay a few more days in Calgary on their way home. If you have a look at all the shows going on across North America, there isn't a weekend without multiple conflicts in the first 6 weeks of the year. Calgary also has the Boat and Sportsman show two weeks after in February, so holding the Expo in January avoids a conflict with that subsequent show. Hope that helps.

By the way, the tickets for the Calgary SCI Dinner and Auction on the Saturday January 26, 2019, allow for free weekend entrance to the Expo. The two events are held in two adjacent hotels.

Here is the link to the Auction, where bidders can bid from home if they are unable to attend the dinner.

Why in gods name would anyone hold an international hunting expo the same week as Shot Show?

and also, to be fair, the SHOT show is targeted at industry insiders, retailers, firearms journalists, etc. while the hunting show is aimed squarely at customers and potential customers. Definitely an overlapping but also separate target audiences.

The attendees are certainly not the exact same people, but from an attracting exhibitors point of view, many of the smaller firms wouldn't be able to support two shows in the same week, and given the choice...

Quite the opposite. Most outfitters are travelling long distances and want to build a circuit of back to back shows to get best bang for buck and time, show season is Jan-Feb generally.

This said, similar crossover between SHOT show and Safari Club as a boat & fishing show and SHOT. Very, very different crowds.

Back to back is one thing. Yes shipping from show to show rather than show to warehouse to show is more efficient and cheaper. Can't be in two places at the same time.
