Scope mounts when using a rail?

I've got a new to me Tikka that came with a rail...not sure brand, says NEAR on it. I usually use Talley one piece scope mounts. Do these work on a rail? I don't see how they would. Otherwise, which mounts do? Or do you suggest removing rail and just going directly with the Talleys? Thanks!

That NEAR rail should finance your talley one piece mounts with some leftovers. Remove and sell. Otherwise, you need rings - picatinny, weaver style, or as leupold likes to call them, cross slot.

I currently own a nice set of Talley extra lows from my last set up. So, guessing I can't use them with the rail... If i go with the rail, any preferred rings and ones that will keep my scope set up as low as possible? Thanks again.

the Talley LW's bolt down to the receiver. Right now you have a rail bolted down to the receiver...

If low mounting is what you want then turn the screws on the rail counter clockwise until the rail lifts off your action and install your Xtra Low Talley LW's.

^^ LOL ^^ ..... I'd personally keep the rail and use a set of low Weaver style rings. Rails offer more flexibility for scope mounting position.

I have a rail on my Tikka Battue with 2 sets of rings and 2 scopes. One for hunting and one for sighting in new loads with higher magnification scope. I thought I would try something different this time...

Fixed it...:)

Which model of Tikka do you have? What scope are you planning on mounting? What do you want to do with your setup? :)

Richard Near makes high quality bases and rings. I'd give him a call and see what ring height he'd recommend for your particular scope. I've done this several times, the fit and quality of his products are excellent.

T3x laminated stainless 30 06 with Zeiss Conquest 3-9 x 40. Big game hunting. Curious about rail as prefer scope as far away from me as possible as I'm very tall with long arms...nice to have rings spread out on the scope.

If its a Picatinny rail vs a Weaver rail, the type of ring you buy is a consideration. Weaver rings on a Picatinny rail will fit, but have very little bearing area on the rail. The last time I tried this combo, I damaged the rail. Conversely, Picatinny rings generally wont fit on a Weaver rail as the cross bolt is too thick.

A NEAR base is very good quality. I'm normally a Talley guy or leupold standard guy but if I had a rifle with a NEAR base on it I'd be getting rings to match.

Nice rifle. :)

SuperFudd ( :p ) and cosmic have some excellent points. I've use Piccatinny rails on my last two rifles. Lots of upsides, IMO. Biggest downside is the height above bore for most ring/rail combos, but that can be easily dealt with. Additionally, I'd have way more faith in the zero retention of a good rail with good rings, than I would in Talley LWs.

I really like the Burris XTR Sig rings, they are easy on scope tubes and very stout.

Sounds like getting a low scope mount while using this rail is not possible, according to the manufacturer. Sadly, I'll likely be removing it. Happy to sell it if anyone is interested.
