thanks

It sounds like excess headspace. A fix would probably require new locking lugs, possibly new bolt.

To get around the problem you can run an oversize expander ( .32 special or .338) button through the cases, then resize in your 30-30 die leaving a false shoulder on the brass just forward enough to headspace the cartridge . Once fire formed only resize as much as required to maintain what is in effect a slightly "improved" case length.

STOCKER;
I'm a little confused here, since the .30/30 is a rimmed case and such cases headspace on the rim how does the above process resolve such a problem ?

Bulged primers

You adjust the false shoulder so the case is now headspacing on the shoulder and the head of the case is being forced back against the bolt face. When you fireform it you create a permanent shoulder that is moved forward slightly thus maintaining cartridge head/bolt face contact. If you are shooting factory cartridges only it's not an option. It works fine for most most rimmed cartridges of moderate pressure.

Don't worry about it... keep on shooting factory ammo... lots of 30-30's end up with protruding primers, most people don't notice it.

Accurately measure the protrusion, I would be surprised if it is half what you say it looks like.... or take it to a gunsmith for an actual inspection.

:agree: I've seen quite a few old 94s do this.

This is common in M94's.

As with all cartridges, rimmed or not, the firing pin strike pushes the case forward and takes up the head-space in the chamber. The expanding gases in the case push the primer out of the primer pocket until it touches the bolt face. As the pressure builds the case expands until it touches the chamber walls and then is driven back so that the base of the case is again in contact with the bolt face re-seating the primer in the process. Quite often in the M94 the chamber pressure is not sufficient to drive the case back against the resistance of the case walls gripping the chamber which leaves the primer protruding a bit. (A rough chamber will excaberate the "problem" )
