mini 14's

Minis have gone up; it is what it is. Even the Americans are paying $800-850 USD judging by a quick glance at American sites like Bud’s. We, of course, have a low dollar and Canadian pricing on top of that.

Well, at an $800.00 USD selling price that would come to about $1150.00 CDN based on today's exchange rate. So based on that I sort of got a deal at $1039.00CDN. But you are correct, the price sure has gone up...

You are wanting one of the most unsung Non Restricted semi autos of all time and will not be disappointed. They are easy to maintain and robust. Some have non Mia accuracy, but some are quite the opposite and some customs can be very accurate. I have been very happy with my 14 & 39 and wish I could get a 6.8.

Given the other BS I've heard at gun counters I'm willing to believe a second hand account of a gun salesman saying something incredibly stupid.

As to Mini's. I've owned 2. An older 187 series that was violently overgassed but reliable as hell. From a cold bore it could print anywhere from about 3/4" to 1 1/4" at 100 yd 3 shot groups. By then the barrel would be hot to the touch and starts throwing flyers, groups would open to 3-5 moa every time I'd try for a 5 shot group. A second group would be a 5-6 moa mess until it cooled. Perfectly fine for dusting a coyote off your property but not a great range rifle. This was with tuned handloads, factory ammo was just crap. It was bedded into its wood stock and had a nice trigger job. Never had a malfunction though. Sold it for a loss.

Later I started reading about Rugers claimed improvements to the 580+ mini's and kept hearing 2-3 moa 5 shot groups with factory ammo in unmolested rifles. So I bought a brand new one last year during Wholesale's closeout. I've been impressed so far, reliability is still 100% and it is not overgassed. Its vigorous but doesn't throw brass over the horizon. Sights are better and with a trigger job its a pretty good little rifle. I haven't sat it down for pure accuracy testing but untuned loads are under 3". These were old fodder loaded for plinking with charges dropped from a Lee Autodisk loaded with LC 55 gr fodder. No flyers to speak of. Eventually I'll get a match load worked up, most likely with 68 gr Hornady btfmj.

not sure what is worth less than 1000 these days. The later minis are a quality firearm... ruger should tacticool them they would sell well, now they are a bit outdated

In the 90's $500 carried the same purchasing power of $937 today with the cumulative price change. So the mini 14 is still the same price today with improvements.

Edit... you actually over paid since you bought used lol

Ruger makes a more "tactical" mini but the damn barrel is 16" so that leaves it restricted for us up here.
 
Starting in the 580 series Ruger started making thicker barrels, better sights, drilled for scope rings and now a picatiny rail etc

Accuracy is said to be 2-3 moa now.

like i said, i love mine more than any of my AR's and its more accurate than i am.

I don't know why this myth persists, you can get 5 round factory mags for $30 all over the country.
Any run of the mill ar15 mag is at least 26 bucks. M14 mags are 40 bucks each. A sig 226 pistol mag will run you 50 bucks. Hell a piece of s**t savage mkii 10 rounder is 22 bucks.
The only ones that are expensive is the 5/20 and 5/30 ones. Which are as pointless as you can get as you can only put 5 rounds anyhow.
30 bucks for a center fire good quality ruger mag is NOT expensive by any comparison to other types in this country.
 
i have a 582 series in 5.56
tinkered with it a bit to see what i could get for accuracy.
hogue stock , adjustable gas block (really tames ejection ) leupold vxr 1-4 scope & had the barrel threaded to accept 1/2x28 muzzle devices.
currently has an AGW 5 prong flash suppressor.
rifle is absolutely reliable & groups inside an inch at 50 yards with hornady steel match 55gr.
i can't ask for more from this rifle.
