mini 14's

Were those rapid fire shots? That accuracy is definitely good enough for me!
Anyone know about getting the tactical model with the flash hider etc..in Canada? I keep seeing the ranch model, but looking for a tactical model ideally in a wood stock. It will probably end up in one anyways.
Any basic accessories or tweeks/tips that a buyer would want to be aware of? Grease on certain parts being a garand style action etc...

This was not rapid fire shooting. I was taking my time trying to see how accurate I could be.

I more I look at these posts the more I think you should just save a little more money and get a Valmet Hunter in .223. By the time you buy the Ruger and then pay for the mods you can almost pick up a Valmet. The rifle I owned was bone stock, the only thing that was done was the scope rings were lapped.

Here I am shooting off the seat of a quad, 25 year old bulk ammo. You can see I am not grouping, so its either me or the ammo and it still shoots better then a range set up with a Ruger. My two bits.

Nice Valmet! How much do they sell for? Very rare that I have seen them.

I have seen people asking $2-3K, sale would be lower, a safe price would be $2200-2400. The more expensive ones come in the original box and have not been fired / or very little. This one was really dirty but it cleaned up like new, the wood looked bad, simply oiled it and it came back.. Its really a testament to how well these Valmets are built. The Valmets are based on the AK47 action. Technically they should be a prohib but so far they have kept their nose clean and not made the news. I had a M78 as well. The only downside is they are heavy.

Ps. rural cops in the US used to keep these in their trunk, they take a high cap mag.

Now you’ve gone and done it! Dirty nose now.

Nothing wrong with Valmet rifles but it's a bit silly to act like you can just go buy one, even if you have the money. I doubt I have seen more than two dozen for sale my entire life. Most are .308 it seems and I'm sorry but if we are talking overpriced guns then the Valmets blow the minis right out of the water.

Beat me to it. If these were more prevalent and around the $1000 mark I'd buy one in a heartbeat...Very nice looking rifle though, I just can't justify $2500 on it and to try and source one.

Just read a U.S based article talking about the Valmet's and how the Hunter models in .308 take proprietary mags that range from $150-300...USD. If anyone thought Ruger mags were expensive or hard to come by...

Nice rifle but this thread is about mini 14's not about a rifle that is basically unobtainable .

They are probably the nicest AK type rifles out there. Really though does that say much? The market is the only reason they get the prices they do. After handling and firing some I don't even look at the Valmets ads anymore. It's just not worth it unless you are obsessed with getting an AK type rifle or you are collecting.

i picked up the gen4 adjustable gas block from brownells, fits perfectly & installed easily.
i played with the dial & watched my ejected brass come closer & closer (from about 30 feet to 10).
i stopped there because i didn't want to hurt it's reliability.
i'll probably play some more after i mark the sweet spot on the regulator. i'm curious to see how much more adjustment there is
before i start getting stoppages or turn it into a single shot.
i saw a noticeable difference in perceived muzzle flip & recoil if you can call it that lol.
for me anyway, it was worth it.

I will take that info under advisement, Thanks

Does anyone have a source for different gas bushings in Canada? Also has anyone ever swapped out the bladed front sight on a 187 series to install a pin-on flash hider or aftermarket front sight post? I'm assuming I need to have the barrel cut and re-crowned for this?

I've had a go at machining a couple of test pieces, here they are in 0.040" and 0.060" next to the enormous 0.095" that came with the rifle.

I haven't had time to try them out yet, still waiting on a tap to re-do the gas block threads that are stripping my screws.

I don't know if this will help but I removed the front sight on my 580 series, had the barrel threaded(1/2x28) and put a VG6 Epsilon 556 muzzle brake on it. Works really great, not that these rifles have much of a kick anyway. The front sight was a real bear to remove, it had to be heated, put in a vice and removed. I had it done by a Gunsmith and he told me the story. Hope this helps..

Jacqson- that's pretty cool looking! notice any difference? does the weight of the muzzle brake help keep the barrel vibrations down you think? I'll check out some 'smiths near me to see if that's possible to thread.
