Opinions on .358 Win for deer?

Lotsa good .358" bullets suit the 358 including 250s I believe.

Even "Mr. 270" Jack O'Conner in a 1962 article entitled Deer and Deer Rifles, writes that he "... regards the neglected and obsolescent .358 Winchester cartridge with its 200-grain bullet at 2,530 or its 250-grain bullet at 2,250 as probably the most deadly woods cartridge in existence, not only for deer but for elk and even moose. The .358 has the power and weight to drive deep on the rear-end shot, which the woods hunter all too often has to take."

What Martinbns said x2...a heavy 35 calibre bullet travelling at .358 speeds negates the need for premiums. Something like a Hornady Interlock will provide all the performance you need.

I have never owned or shot a .358, but I wonder what is the point?

A .308 wll do the same job...

But if the 358 is your "thing" thn go for ut........

Hmmm... tell the Big Doe two years ago with a fist sized entrance and fist sized exit wounds that a 250 isnt recommended...
That was out of a 356 win, the rimmed version of the 358 win

One of the older hunt camp guys used his Win. 88 in 358 since about 1960. When he shot, there was always game to drag ... and he shot a lot of game with it. At least a dozen moose I remember, and a pant load of deer.

If there's really a better Eastern "bush" cartridge for whitey's, black bear & moose, I'm not sure what it might be. Winchester's standard 200gr. Silvertips seemed to work just fine for him.

While I personally kind of like the 35 cal's, I must say this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone referr to a fist sized entry hole on a positive note. Was it a shoulder or rib shot, or other?

I will report in full this fall, i am currently having a 358 barrel cut to 20 " and screwed on my stevens 200 action for a short "camp gun" which will really see most use in the bush. The only factory loads, however, that i have found for this guy are the 200 gr power point in the Super-X offering. And the only place i have found them in my area (including Calgary and Edmonton) is at the Crappy Tire in Red Deer.

I have a 358 BLR. Works good on deer, moose, elk, bears. You only end up with a couple of bullet weights that you will use (or even just one, becasue you tend to standardise after a while). I favour the 225 gr, but the 250 Speer is more accurate in my rifle. I don't find the recoil any worse then my cousin's 308 BLR (shooting them side by side for comparison), but as there is a brake on my 358 (bought it that way), that comparison really isn't very valid. The brake makes it way too loud though. FWIW - dan

Fist sized hole...??? What a waste of good meat....I have hunted for over 40 years and until last year only used a .303 enfield....Deer, moose, elk and bear....one shot one kill....never had a "wounded" to chase after. If you shoot well and have gotten within a good range....I see no need for a "cannon caliber" to put meat on the table.

There is no good meat in the ribs worth worrying about, and the 358 win is no more a cannon than a 303 brit, just a bigger Dia bullet...

What an INTERESTING thread! Like so many in this forum.

In this corner, ladies and gentlemen, we have a guy from Winterpeg who has hunted for FORTY YEARS and using the GREAT CANADIAN CHAMBERING .303 British has NEVER, no not a single time, EVER, wounded a game animal. Hell, he has not even had to track them, they all dropped right where Mister Dead Eye shot them.

Hey, what's that smell?????? :onCrack:

Hmm, joined last month, probably somebody we should all be taking lessons from and hopefully he will soon open an on-line e-learning centre for those of us who HAVE wounded game, and/or used more than one shot to dispatch it.

The .358 Win is a great cartridge in my view but despite having owned a bunch of rifles in this chambering I have yet to SHOOT a living thing with one. Hey, at least I am honest.................:p

Couple years ago I shot a large buck with my 358,thought I had missed. He went about 20 feet into the spruce & died.No wasted meat through the boiler room.DAN>>>

Whats the smell???? guess it is the deer meat frying in the pan....scouting and building good blinds let the deer walk to you, not you shoot to the deer. Head shots at less than 60 feet are the norm and no, I have not trailed a "wound" at any time...usually they are down within a couple yards.... huntin
g for subsistance does not allow for the long shots nor the risky...only "sure shots" put meat on the table. Only "honest " super hunters trail thier game. I put noone down at all who hunt the way they do, I only comment on my own hunting experience.

If you would like to get back to the subject that was being discussed...The .358 is a great gun if you really need it but lots of smaller caliber rifles can do the same job with practice and knowledge of the game.

The reason I have only been here a month is because I only recently was told about the site. I read it for a while before I joined. I came here not to bash people but only to observe and offer my experience and advice to those that ask.

I have a nice Win 94AE in .356 Win. I wanna shoot yogi over bait with it this fall... it should be perfect for bears. Darryl's got a scope mount for me... don't know what glass to use though.... thinking 1.5-5 VXIII Illuminated reticle.
Or maybe just the Wiliams peep that is on it?

I can't believe my luck... ;)
