A group of us are considering on heading up to Bruce Mines to Carpender Lake cabins deer hunting, we've never been to this area before and I am looking for some advice from fellow gun nutz that may live in the area or have been there.
Some questions I have are
Is there lots of crown land in this area?
What is the landscape like (thick bush, clear cuts, flat or hilly)?
Whats the deer population like?
What is the chance we will have snow?
What type of hunting is most successful in this area (driving, still, stalking)
If you stayed at Carpender lake cabins were you satisfied with your experience.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

There isn't alot of us on here dude (4 I think). I out of us 4 I believe I'm the only one who hunts...the other 3 are target guys I *think*. You could always call up Carpenter Lake Cabins and have a detailed conversation about the hunt with them.

I did speak with Jan at Carpender Lake and received some email correspondence with the owner, but like most people I would rather talk to someone who doesn't have any monetary connections to the place if ya now what I mean.;) I did appreciate your PM archie.

Information

Use to hunt up there in the 70's ,lots of grouse, and bear. Saw a few moose and one of the biggest deer I've ever seen. Your not that far from area go on up and learn the area. Great people and a beautiful area to hunt and fish. Stewart and Rock lake use to give up some nice Brookies and the odd Laker.

Like previous post stated there is not a lot of Soo area folks on CGN. As a suggestion since your in NE Ont. perhaps you could take the wife and kids on a little drive for a 3 day weekend and check things out. Earth google is your friend, plus the local MNR office can be of help. It is really not that much different than where you are except French is not as prevalent. Something wrong with the hunting in NE Ont.....?

Its plenty different, no deer anywhere near where I live . We've been hunting NW Ontario as of late but looking for something a little closer to home.

I've fished at Carpenter Lake cabins, the accommodations are very reasonable - more like bungalows rather than cabins. Although they are off grid, the have all mod cons via solar and propane heat. Cant comment on the deer hunting. bush is mixed, lots of logging trails to access areas.
