I went to the same farm where I got that big orange/red coloured male a few weeks ago. I setup in the same location arriving and setting up just before legal light.
Once legal light came, I started off with a few dying rabbit sounds and before I could finish my first set of screaming sounds, (45 seconds?) this oranged/red coloured coyote comes running right out of the tall grass and makes a beeline to the decoy/caller.
It catches me a little off guard, I turn to get him into my crosshairs (same time yelling out wolf so he could stop as he was running pretty hard toward the decoy) but he doesn't stop. He makes it to the decoy, stops for a split second (realizes somethings up) turns to run and I drop him right at the decoy...... Wow, that was cool and quick.....
Is there another one out there because this happened real quick, so decide to crank up the ecaller with a dying rabbit sound and the next coyote comes screaming out just like the first, a steady run at the decoy. She doesn't stop at the sound of my wolf sounds, she reaches her buddy but doesn't stand still for a shot, instead she too realizes something is deadly wrong so turns on the after burners...
I keep trying to get her to stop by screaming out wolf sounds but she is not interested....no choice but to try and take her out with a running shot.... I follow her in the scope and when I think I am on her good, I take the shot (150yds). She drops but get back up and makes her way to a drainage ditch a few yards away. I watch the drainage ditch, she doesn't come out the other side so I know she is hiding in there.
I wait about 20 minutes, collected my gear and go after her in that drainage ditch. As I reached the 50 yd mark from where she went in, I see her move. She tries to run off so I had to put another round, finishing shot into her....
It ends well but not great as both the hides shown sign of mange. The orange coloured (hard to see in the pic) one could be the offspring of the orange/red coloured one I got two weeks ago.

It just goes to show you that getting into your setup quietly is essential as this first coyote most likely was just in that tall grass mousing 150 yds away?

I am surprised the decoys worked as fast as that! Obviously they were very close, and didn't get spooked when you did your set up.

And I'll second that remark ^^^^^^ about needing better diagrams (smile). There is much to be learned from seeing how other hunters get their animals.

Ontario coyotes really seem to like that red color. Not likely to see it out here. The fur market likes them as light as possible.

What decoy do you use?

The one that attaches to my ecaller.... Anything will work, you just need something that moves/spins to keep them interested and eyes off of you..... For a cheap decoy that works.....
Pick up a small cheap electric motor (hobbie shop)
At the top of the motor, tape a feather or cloth onto the top of it (top part of the shaft of the motor)
Connect the motor wires to a 9volt? battery (little rectangular ones-get the connector at the hobbie shop too)
Tape the motor to the top of an arrow or any piece of shaft that will stick into the ground
Turn it on (attach the battery connector and walk away)
I did this for years before getting my current decoy....it worked great

Good show - shame about the mange though.

We went out this AM where we had the wolves howling last night. After a few bowls My72Jeep texted me saying he had a skittish coyote show up on his hydro line but he didn't get a chance to get a shot. I switched to a coyote pack howl and within 30 seconds heard a gunshot from over there. Coyote came back out but wouldn't stop and unfortunately he missed it.

Cross wind. I like it.
Small motor and a rag. Also like that.
I wanted to get out this week but I am on call at work. Will have a couple lieu days next week and I’ll give it a try then.

How many times have you been out between your last two posts?

Nice work Frank ! Making red dogs dead dogs.

PS: You can use an arrowshaft, piece of fishing line and a turkey feather as a decoy no motor required just a slight wind and the feather dances and spins.....it works

I been out a few times, I think this would have been 7 sets total (+or- 1) as close as I can figure anyway.....

I don't think I would be handling them much if they have mange. I carry a heavyweight garbage bag with me so if I shoot a mangy one I use the bag to touch/pickup/carry the carcass for disposal. I never let it touch me or my clothes. To dispose of the carcass I either bury or burn it or toss it in the disposal bin at work.

Why I always carry disposable gloves....good reminder

Sparse hair on the tail is a give away.
