Here is my first Precision (Wildcat) build.
Rem700 action taken from a Rem700 SPS in 300 WSM, that I had purchased for a different project and then changed directions (ps. I still have the bbl if anyone wants one).
Gaillard 6.5mm 1:8 Twist Medium-Heavy BBL finished at 27.5 inches.
Custom Wildcat reamer from Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge
Jewel BR trigger set to 3.5 lbs, Holland OEM (McMillan Stock), and Holland Pillars as well as Holland Muzzle brake. Final bedding with Devcon 10110 steel putty.
NightForce NXS 3-15 X 50mm scope on a 20 degree Picatiny rail.
First off I need to give credit where it is due, I have had many helpful conversations and emails with Joe ##### (Dealer on this board.. http://www.################.com/) about precision rifles, and components. Joe is finishing my next rifle, the one that was spawned by this project.
Also thanks to Jeff Smith (member here) of Valley Guns for all his helpful hints and directions with the bedding process.
Most of all I need to recognize Francisco Abusaid of Omega Custom Guns (dealer on this board .. http://www.omegacustomguns.com/) . Francisco and I have been shooting IPSC together for several years and he is well respected in Toronto as an expert custom pistolsmith. After prodding from me he consented to make this his first custom precision rifle project. Francisco designed and fabricated all the jigs, and fixtures needed to perform the work on this rifle. Francisco is a master machinist and intuitive gunsmith, despite this being his first rifle the results were outstanding.
My reason for the choice of 6.5x270 WSM as the caliber of choice was based on several things, (1) I had the action (2) Norma makes excellent brass for 270 WSM (the parent case), and Lee makes a 6.5 x 300 WSM die, for final forming after firing, I used Forster 300 WSM bump die with bushings for 6.5x284. (3) I went with the 270 WSM case because I want to be able to use this for varmints, and in Ontario we are limited to a max of 275 cal in much of the Province and I wanted the head stamp to be consistent with this.
I experimented with IMR 7828SSC, and H1000, I have settled on the H1000 as the IMR seemed a bit more temperature sensitive. For precision matches I am using Lapua 139gn Scenar’s from Peter Dobson, I have not decided on what to use for a hunting bullet. So far my results have been promising.
Using Norma brass, Lapua bullets, and 61 gn of H1000 I am getting 3000fps and groups of 0.5 inches or less at 100 yards, 1.1-1.6 inches at 300 yards and in my only trip out to the 900 yard line at Mons I recorded a 48.7 out of a possible 50.
And at 1000 yards I recorded a score of 73.6 out of a possible 75
