When did I say a stock express was unreliable without upgrades? I said a less expensive express with some upgraded bits and a polish was just as good or better way than a more expensive 870P, seeing what the OP is asking for...
Exactly the OP is asking about a $299 shotgun and you suggest a $650-750 870p, what makes you think he’s looking for that?
Something to do with the first and last sentence of his original post. He wasn’t asking exclusively about the Canuck, kind of like how the title of his thread suggests. Even though this is the internet, I still try to maintain a sense of politeness, in that I try to stay in my lane and won’t comment in things I don’t know about, or offer up something that someone isn’t asking for.

I’m surprised you didn’t say he should get a benelli m4 lol.
I could’ve, since he didn’t mention price range lol. Yes I’m being sarcastic. I can take a hint, in that if he’s looking at a Canuck, maybe his budget is steering him there. So be it. I’m glad you suggested what you did, as I do believe it’s a viable alternative, if practical for the person.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with an 870p or a Wingmaster and yes no mention of budget was stated. I hope the OP finds something that fills all the boxes, nothing wrong with what you suggested originally. I always look for the most bang for my buck, regardless of price it has to be reliable. I have no use for a gun that I can’t rely on to go bang when I pull the trigger.

I've handled these grizzlies and they weigh a ton.
yes there is more expensive options, even battle proven.
No one has mentioned the good ole maverick 88.
I have had one for nearly 10 years. It's seen a thing or two. It's been abused and neglected, Severely and I mean it.
It always works. It's never jammed up. It works on all angles, upside down, you name it. I've run it through a few shotgun courses.
The round count has to be pushing 5000. It's been cleaned 3 or 4 times. It's been put away covered in ice, or mud without so much as a wipe. It's been completely submerged under gritty soupy mud.. simply racking it under water in the lake and it was good to go, functioned perfectly.
It cost $280.
I would put my life on it to go bang every single time.
It started out as the typical 18" full stock defender model but now wears a 14" barrel and a collapsible m4 stock with magpul furniture. It's light, reliable, and fits me like it was Taylor's to me.. because it was. The sidesaddle shell holder is kinda meh. It's handy but I lose a shell here and there. https://i.imgur.com/maxlEJZ.jpg

After reading this I dug into the Flex Tab topic and found that although the Norinco/DA 870 clones don’t have the carrier “U” cut out they do have the bottom of the bolts machined to by pass a ghost loaded shell. Slide Plate has one side clearance cut. In any case these 2 parts are easily replaced by Remington Parts to match the Rem 870 Flexitab system. With that said if your able to ghost load a shell, as there is a Canadian YouTube video of an individual cycling the shells thru, I can’t see this being an issue. Again, the parts to remedy this are available to ensure 870 reliability.
You can carry a shotgun, large caliber rifle, a howitzer or a large rock. None of them matter at all if you cannot deploy your defensive weapon in 5 seconds or less.
Don't take my word for it. Go read some of the threads on here from guys that have been charged or even forced to shoot. Every single one of them comment about how fast it all happens.

Agreed, as with most defensive situations whether regarding 2 or 4 leg baddies.
This is why we really need wilderness open carry... a glock 20 in a holster beats the hell out of anything in a pack.

If you can find a late '90's Wingmaster, you get the flexi tab, 3 inch chamber, better quality machine and finish, forged extractor and they're pretty cheap ($350-$450) Add a 14 inch Remington barrel (sometimes Grizzly tubes fit, sometimes they don't) for less than $300. You've got what you need, replacement of stocks and bits can occur over time. I'd personally put in a Vang Comp follower, the XS Big Dot front and a way to attach a 2 point sling (Vicas).

I usually pack my canuck regulator with me exploring, on my gold claim or wherever I find myself. Build quality is pretty good on these turkish guns compared to some others.It's really fast to pull out of my eberlestock bag and light. It's gone bang every time I've pulled the trigger and that's good enough for me. I also have a 12.5" wingmaster but just prefer the pistol grip for packing around. It's also nice to not worry about damaging a $250-300 gun.
