Here's my question...which is the faster more reliable pump for the action shooting sports...the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 500/590?

I've been shooting an 870 for years but got my hands on a 500 yesterday and it seems like a much more solid shotgun then the 870...but is it as fast?

Any and all opinions are welcome!

I've owned both, and in my opinion the 590 and 870 are both good quality shotguns. Seems to me that 870's tend to be a bit slicker, but individual guns can be a little better or a little worse within models. My 590 can shoot as fast as I can, and I prefer it for ease of parts replacement - although nothing has failed after 7 years of hard use. The 870 has a riveted in ejector whereas the 590 ejector is screwed in place. This is the feature which contributed to me getting the 590 this time around, as I didn't want to send the gun out if I had a breakage.

I like the fact that the feeder ramp(Elevator) for the 590 is normally in the "up" position and only moves down when cycling for the next shell, whereas the feeder ramp for the 870 is normally in the "down" position, IMO the feeder ramp gets in the way when loading shells into the magazine. I have even heard rumors that people have got their thumb snagged by the ramp while doing "quick" loading(but I've never actually experienced nor personally seen this occur).

I also like the look and feel of the marine coating on the Mossberg better than the coating on the 870.

From a functional point of view, I would have to say both shotguns are a good purchase, I just wish my mossberg came with a sight base attached to the barrel instead of a brass bead, my brother bought the 590A1 and it comes with great ghost-ring sights.

If you don't care about the marine coating I'd say go with the 590A1, overall it has to be the best shotgun out there(IMO of course).

They are both greta shotguns.

The one that's faster, is the one that YOU handle best, not what others say.

You will only find out by shooting both at the same session, using the same ammo.

No, the one that's faster is any one without a trigger disconnector like an Ithaca 37 or Winchester 1897 ;) just squeeze the trigger and pump away like you were sweeping a trench ;)

i've heard the 500 feels cheap and "flexy"
870 has more aftermarket and is much easier to take apart to clean
However a lot of LEO use both, so..

I think the Mossberg 590 has a more reliable extraction/ejection system compaired to the Remington 870. I own both, an 870 Marine Magnum and an M590-A1 14" ...the 870 had a couple of failure to eject (Mabee 4 shells out of 100)

The mossberg M590-A1 is flawless, I believe its due to the duel extractor system on the bolt and the tougher pressured ejector. Just my 2 cents, both kick-ass but I must say I like my parkerized 14" Mossy a little better :)

Guys to be fair when you say 870, there are several kind. When comparing the Mossberg 590A1 to the the Remington, the equivalent is the 870P.

This is the Ford vs Chevy argument of shotguns. I've owned both and would be hard pressed to pick the 'better' one.

Go with what works for you.

how hard is the 590 to take apart?

Pull the slide back half way, put on the safety, remove the barrel, push out one pin that holds in the trigger group, lift out the trigger group, lift out the "block" that connects the action bars to the bolt, slide the fore-end/action bars out, slide the bolt out through the front of the action then remove the elevator, done.

I have two 500's, one with 28" accu-choke barrel and one with a 24" rifled barrel and scope. The rifled version has only had 15 rnds through it so far (only had it a few weeks), the smoothbore though, has seen a lot of use over the last few years field hunting waterfowl (lots of mud, rain etc) and no issues at all. I have tried an 870, nothing wrong with it, but I like my Mossbergs better and they cost less.

Not really.

I've had my 870 for almost 28 years and have NEVER had an extraction problem and I know others that haven't either.

I've replace extractors on Mossy's and some 870's.

i have used both, the police 870's are pretty sturdy and i like the steel receiver, but i love my 590a1 more. dual extractors, elevator always up when loading, safety easy to get at and the slide release is in a better location. Both are fine by me but i like the mossy more.
