Been looking to add a new caliber to my collection 357 sig. I like the looks of the Glock 31 or 32 . Nobody seems to have them , anybody know where a guy can get one. The ammo seems cheap to reload.

The . 357Sig ammunition situation (i.e.: high cost and low availability) makes them less popular (in Canada, especially) compared to their 9mm variants, so - like the ammunition - they're harder to find; buy it when you find it.

It is found on the website of Firearms Outlet Canada:

Because of the ammo situation with the 357sig (cost and availability), I would recommend seeking out a 357sig / 40S&W package. They are interchangeable calibers. All you need is a different barrel. You'll have 357 sig because it is kind of cool, but also 40 so you can find ammo and shoot it regularly.

Options would be to by a Glock 22 in 40 and get the 357 conversion barrel or get the 31 and get the 40 conversion barrel.

If you really want the dedicated 357 package, I would try a WTB ad for the 31. They are out there. When they come up on EE they do not move quickly either unless they have the 40 barrel.

That's odd about the ammo supply. I've been noticing the opposite ,the suppliers I use for reloading have thousands of rounds available for 357.sig and not vary much if anything for 40sw. That's a reason why I was interested in it,looked like ample reload abilities, and it's only slightly more expensive than 45 acp. I can find plenty of guns in 40sw but no reloading.

I was always interested in the .357 Sig until I heard it had major problems with bullet setback, both in factory and reloaded ammo. I have not experienced this myself but have seen it with other shooters reloads. You might want to look into this before you jump in.

Missed the fact that you are a reloader. Yes that does change the equation

Not sure what you are referring to when you say "bullet set back" is that seating depth? If you could elaborate a bit more on this, I don't want to paint myself into a corner.

Thanks

The action of the slide functioning can cause the bullet to set back into the case because there is not enough tension on the case neck to hold the bullet in place. This causes increased case pressure in what is already a high pressure round.

Just Google. 357 Sig and bullet setback. I have seen reloaded .357 Sig do this at matches, heard it can happen with factory if it is unloaded and rechambered without being fired the first time.

He probably means that the bullet gets pushed deeper into the case as it gets chambered.

I have not had this problem - yet - but I can see the risk. There is very little contact between the bullet and case wall.

I have been loading the 130 gr cast lead 38 Spl bullet (sized .358) It gets lots of neck tension.

My Glock has both the 357 barrel and the 40. Have not yet shot it with the 40.

The case has a shoulder, but the ammo factory make the brass so that the case headspaces on the case mouth. When you make your brass by sizing the 40 cal brass to 357 (easy to do with a single stroke) the resulting case is a tad short. The solution is to move the shoulder forward a bit so that the case can headspace on the shoulder. To do this, adjust the sizing die so it does not quite touch the shell plate.

The flat-nosed 124 gr plated bullets work perfectly in 357. The round nose won't.

Did a little research and yes this is a real problem with the 357 sig. Lots of info on bullets setting back. Seem there are a few loads that use a fully loaded compressed powder so the powder will support the bullet. accurate #9 and 147 grain projectiles seem to keep coming up as good loads eliminate bullet setback. Man, I really don't know if I want to open this can of worms. It sounds possible to use this round effectively and people swear by it when loaded with the correct setup, but.....

Seems more pondering is needed before I jump in both feet.

Thanks again for the insight.

Some cartridges are easier to reload than others.

To make good 357 Sig cases out of 40 S&W, don't let the die hit the shell plate. This gives the case something to headspace on -the case shoulder.

As for bullet set back, use a fatter bullet to create lots of neck tension. For cheap, accurate plinkers I use the 38 Spl bullets.

I have used a lot of Campro plated bullets with no problem. Maybe the 40S&W cases a re bit thicker in the wall, creating more neck tension?

Police Ordnance has them on their website: <http://192.139.188.74/PoliceOrdnance/index.asp?id1=88>

Sporteque has the Glock 31 'In Stock' on their website now. They also have a bunch of IGB barrels that will fit it.

The Glock 32 is a prohibited class auto with that short 102mm barrel. So thats out...

There are several aftermarket 106mm (and longer) barrel options for the G32, including those offered by IGB, Lone Wolf, and Storm Lake.

Bit of an old thread but been doing some research lately, looks like a good option is a Glock 35 g4 and just run conversion barrels, 9mm and 357 sig. I like the idea of just changing barrels and mags to get the different calibers. I understand that 9mm,40 sw ,and 357 sig are very close in performance etc but I like loading as well . Hmmm. I've seen good reviews from the conversions.
