M4 vs VersaMax tactical

The VM's operating system is better in some ways but it suffers from a typical lack of QC and refinement, that may require tuning and fixes to get running properly.

Also I heard somewhere that they don't like 2.75" Magnum shells, which can damage the supposedly self adjusting action.

Would like to hear people's thoughts on these two autoloading shotguns.

I have shot a M4 my buddy owns a few times and i really like it other than price. The Versamax is cheaper to purchase but is it as good? My understanding is the gas systems are very similar design.

Thoughts?

Versamax is cheaper, yes, Benelli is the Rolex and the versa max is the Seiko in this comparison

Too many quality control issues and reliability issues with the versamax from what I've read

I guess it all comes down to what you are using is for ?

Maybe you would want to try the versamax out or at least handle one before you decide

I have a psychological problem with the new Remington stuff, all Iam thinking in my mind is: "when's it going to break" ?

I love my M4, had it out Thursday and Friday actually, she's finally broke in and accepting everything I feed her

If you can afford the M4 with your budget, get it and don't look back. Its expensive, but I believe worth the premium. If you end up hating it for whatever reason, you can always sell it off and buy the versamax with the funds. On the other hand, if you get the versamax first and hate it, you'll be torn about selling it at a loss and then ponying up even more to get the Benelli.

My 2 cents

A Tactical Ordinance (Casey) modified Benelli M4 is the real Rolex of all semi-tac shot guns--refinement of the refined--lolben.jpg

I'd choose a Benelli M2 or a Beretta 1301 over a Versamax if money was an issue.

I have both -the M4 and the 1301---the beretta comes to a very close second as its lighter and doesn't need a break in period to feed all loads like the M4---its a great bang for your buck--i hate having chokes as they either get loose or its a ##### cleaning the barrel as they have to be removed--i would choose gen 1.5 in the 1301--which comes with the upgraded bolt release to fix original issue but comes with fixed choke barrel--at 6.5 lbs the 1301 is agile and highly maneuverable.I still favour the M4 as its built like a tank-and like it was stated--will last a lifetime

This thread pushed me over the edge, email sent to T.O. And let the games begin, my M4 will have before and after pics. I want a dang field stock and decent sling setup almost more than anything else..... ;)

got the m4 done and had Casey build me a 14 inch 870 operator--his sht is bar none--trying to wiggle out money from wife for a second m4 too--wish me luck--lol

I own a Versa Max and enjoy it but I have the same feeling that when will it break down. I just picked up a Benelli Vinci Combo with the 28" barrel and 18" tactical with a 3 and 5 shot tube. You cant go wrong with a Benelli. I would go for the Benelli for quality and finish of the gun.
The Versa is a nice gun and swings well but the Benelli M4,M2 or Vinci Tactical are just better guns in my opinion.

Much appreciate all the feedback. I figured the M4 would be the top pick but when i searched the site i was surprised this comparison was not brought up before.

I dont own a lot of guns but if im buying one i want the best.

Took me many years of testing pump shotguns before( from my own experience) i went Fabarm exclusively for my short barrel pumps.

My plan will be to find a good used M4 then send it to Tacord for the treatment.

I have a versamax, when it arrived the rib was a bit crooked so the QC issues aren't a lie. That being said I sent it to Gravel, they covered shipping both ways and ordered me a new barrel from the US, invoice said $950 for the barrel but $0 cost to me. Since I'm the original owner its lifetime warranty, if anything does break in the future I know gravel will take care of me. It'll be a pain in the ass but compared to the sort of warranty support I've read about other B guns (generally poor to abismal in Canada), I personally prefer the protection for the amount of money being invested.

im not sure what you meant by B guns but if you are meaning Benelli then you should enjoy a warranty that you might be using like on a Vortex and ill enjoy a warranty that im never gonna use like a S&B..IF im reading into this wrong then my apologizes....

The only load my Benelli M4 won’t cycle is those Winchester Super Speed 7/8oz Target loads, it fires but not enough to pull the bolt
Completely back. Anything 1oz and higher it spits it out not problem! Love shooting low recoil slugs! M4 is my funnest gun I own!

TacOrd does great work. Had everything done on mine except the Tin Bolt and bolt machining.
