Quick handy open sighted bolt action?

Doesn't the patrol have its iron sights mounted ahead of the action, while the scout has its peep sight mounted behind the action?

Absolutely correct, I was rushing. Thank you for correcting me, fixed my post.
I bought it for the rear peep (which was huge and I had to sleeve it down), and the longer sight radius. Also it was half the price of the Ruger, with a better front sight (imho).

Just curious, why are you particular on it needing a detachable magazine? I only ask because when I was new to shooting I ended up forming a mental bias against anything that didn't have a detachable based on an offhand comment someone more experienced than I had made. I ended up avoiding a huge variety of rifles simply based on that - no tangible reason. If you're open to a hinged floorplate it opens up lots of different models to choose from.

I did own a Ruger M77 Hawkeye all weather with a 22" stainless barrel, hinged floorplate and synthetic stock in 30-06. While that was very close to the perfect hunting rifle for me I have always wanted a "military" type bolt action with good open sights and a detachable magazine. If defending my family from a hoard of zombies it would be nice to have multiple pre loaded magazines rather than fussing with a detachable floorplate. LoL

While I know that a Tikka T3x battue or a CZ 557 Carbine would almost be the perfect hunting rifle for me, I do still get a calling for a "military" type bolt action that I can hunt with. I almost pulled the trigger on an AIA improved Enfield a few years back, kind of happy I didn't at this point. If I could but a really nice Sporter or bubba Enfield No4 Mk1 I would go down that road but everything I have seen is beated up pretty badly, I'm looking for excellent condition or new.

I am open to the idea of a semi auto but the only one that checks the boxes for me is the Norinco M305 shorty but that's a whole other ballgame and likely too heavy for hunting and walking the bush.

What do you need for a length of pull ?

I chose a Ruger Hawkeye Compact in 308 and had a front sight added
for the rear I really like the NECG adj. peep
Ruger claw mounts make it easy to switch the peep for a scope

The only thing a detachable magazine is good for is losing. Hinged floorplates all the way.

Keep your eyes open for a Brno 601 with a pop-up peep sight, and get it built into the rifle you need. As illustrated in Jeff Cooper's Art of the Rifle, this would be the one I'd want. In the meantime a CZ 557 Ranger Ruger Gunsite Scout or a Howa Alpine would look after your immediate needs, and could be sold when your Brno was ready.

Does the CZ 557 carbine have a detachable box magazine or hinged floorplate? Is the .308 version built on a true "short action" or is it just a shimmed long action? Thanks

They stopped production of it a couple of years ago I think. AFAIK it was only available in hinged floorplate. Not sure on the action length. Tenda had one on for a great deal and I just noticed today it's gone off the site. Whoever bought it, thank you for saving me some money!

Tikka Arctic if you want to spend a few grand

Browning A bolt micro medallion. Sweet handy gun. I just picked up a 1980's Rem model 7 in .308win. 18.5" barrel and open sights. I am in love. If you improve your shooting, you wont need extra mags. 1 shot 1 kill.
I just find detachable mags are something to lose and keep track of.

You've got that right, the front blade on the Ruger is a bit imprecise for sure.
