Hello,


I shoot trap every Saturday and recently my stock 870's stock has been slapping me in the face pretty rough.

Anyone have any DIY / Aftermarket suggestions that work?.

I saw a gentleman with several layers of duck-tape over some cotton gauze padding, but didn't inquire about the process.

Stuff similar to this would be interesting to see.

In most cases, cheek slap is caused by incorrect pitch. Try putting two flat washers between the recoil pad and the stock on the top screw holding the recoil pad onto the stock. See if that makes a difference, if it does, try 3 washers and then try one. Once you get the correct number then you can put a permanent fix in place.
 
Good advice and a cheap experiment. Simple.
Bearpaws(Google that) or even foot bunion tape on the top of the butt stock, but that's more to correct a cast on/off issue.
 
If this started recently then something has changed. The way you mount the gun? Have you gained/lost weight? Are you shooting heavier loads? Try the washers to correct pitch or maybe try an adjustable butt pad to lower the toe and raise the stock into your cheek more. Anything else that you add to the stock is just a bandaid and won't correct the problem.
 
Mouse pads work great ( the wrist pads also ),foam interlocking floor mat ( foam rubber ) flip flops are something stiffer ,hot water pipe Insulating covers ( foam rappe) Exercising Apparatus Pads ( the ones that kinda look like pipe insulation ) are thicker if you can find them .ten speed bicycle handle bar rapping. It all depends what you can find handy and what you can live with . There are many commercial types or you could have a custom one made up by a leather worker if you want something fancier . If getto/ hill Billy isn't your thing . I have used a wash cloth folded and taped with a Nylon stocking over it ( shabby Chic) kinda liked the black lace .
 
I too believe its a pitch problem.

There is a article by: SSG Ryan Hadden, US Army Marksmanship Unit Shotgun team. about Home Fitting Your Shotgun Pitch. Its worth a try before you spend any money on other fixes.

Kick Eez sells tapered stock shims in two sizes, you can check their site.
 
I bought a Beartooth comb raising kit for my Browning BPS which I am currently using for trap shooting until I get a dedicated trap gun. Works like a hot damn.

You can also get a slide over shotshell holder for your stock, and then insert some foam into it to adjust your cheek weld. It might be cheaper than a beartooth kit, and if it doesn't work out, you can just remove it.
 
One must be cautious when sticking stuff onto the stock that the space is only added to the area where it will only affect the desired change.

Remember, your eye is the rear sight on a shotgun. When we talk about stock changes we have to talk about POI (point of impact) versus the POA (point of aim). The basic rule of butt stock adjustment is that you move the comb in the direction that you want to move the pattern. So, if you wish to raise the POI, you raise the comb, if you want to move the pattern to the right, you move the comb to the right, etc., etc.

So, if you put something on the butt stock that your face touches, it will move the POI in relation to the POA. Assuming that you are a right handed shooter ... if your goal is to raise the POI and you stick something on the top of the comb, but in doing that you also put material against the side of your face, you have effectively raised your POI, but also shifted it to the left (your eye has shifted to the left because of the material on the side of your face).

Are you confused yet? LOL

Was confused. I had to read it several times and review videos
I appreciate the heads up though.
I haven't modded it yet, but after reviewing this information i have a general idea on how to do it correctly.

I confuse my self some times ... I'm glad you sorted it out. I should look for some images that I could put with that description to make it easier to understand.

Found a video and put it into my previous post.

Besides what the others are saying about the pitch, there are different butt stocks available for the 870. Some factory trap walnut models have raised combs, and could be modified to be adjustable comb. There's even a factory adjustable comb model on some factory competition models. If you are looking for a better fit, maybe a different butt stock would help.
 
Since you mentioned the duct tape remedy, I'll suggest that the Beartooth comb raising kit from Bass Pro for $29 is a somewhat better looking solution to adjusting comb height.. I have them on two of my rifles, though I don't need one with my shotguns.
