My new Stag 10 arrived today, and like all new guns I purchase, the first thing I do is disassemble and clean them. This Stag 10 will not break down when I push out the pivot pin, no matter what I have tried. I was reluctant to post this question, having owned several AR 15s before, but I am truly at a loss. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Thanks , but the link seems dead

Interesting. I just tried and the link I posted seems to work.

Anyways try pushing out both pins and slide the upper forward and bit then lift it off. Take a look to see if the buffer tube is threaded into the receiver too far. If so the rear of the bcg will catch in the buffer tube preventing it from pivoting open when just the rear pin is pushed out.

This guy's rifle had an out of spec buffer tube. Yours may have the same issue.

Thanks, but is is stuck solidly. I sure hope it is not a buffer problem, that was my first guess. It is hard to believe it could be shipped out this way. I bought it brand new from The Gun Dealer in New Brunswick, they are usually good about this stuff.

I am not pounding it on it or doing anything else hasty.... Just hard to believe that a gun got out of the factory in this condition..

Yes I can pull the charging handle back, the bolt moves but the gun will not break down. Got the link to work, checking now.

Ok, instead of just pushing the rear pin out and trying to pivot it open what you need to do is push both pins out. The receiver halves should then separate.

No, that was the wrong way to put it. I can pull the charging handle back, the bolt comes with it then goes back into battery, but the gun will not break forward when I push out the pivot pin. I have owned and stripped down 2 AR 15s many, many times and this never happened before. Pushing the both the rear and the forward pin out does not release the lower either.

If it breaks down with both pins out it’s a known buffer tube problem, send it back.

My receiver set is tight AF as well, I don't even have the rear pin in yet and I have to reef on it to come apart. Some are just tight I guess. Maybe if you have a spare scope ring lying around mount that and use it to pull the upper?

It will not budge with both pins out. Locked solid.

Wow. I don't know what to say to that. There's really nothing in there that would hold the upper from sliding forward once both pins are pushed out.

It won't move forward very far but should be able to move enough to let it come apart. Once the pins are out mine will move forward freely just from the pressure of the buffer pushing on it.

Sounds like you made the right call in deciding to send it back. Unfortunate that you had to though.

I keep thinking it is something stupid that I am overlooking, but do not think so. How is it possible to get a $2000 dollar gun shipped before it is even checked out for functionality ?
