Hey,
I'm pretty new to hunting and shooting and was hoping I could get a few recommendations on rangefinders.
I'm not really looking for a high end one, but also not a cheap one either. I'm not really sure where the price points start, as I'm not sure which are over priced for what you get. I'm even open to good used ones. I figure if I end up using it alot, I'll invest in a better one down the road.
Thanks for any help/advice you can give me.

I have a hard time listening to my own advice. I often find myself cheaping out and almost always regret it. Buy once, cry once.

I bought a bushnell range finder in the beginning then moved to longer ranges, it was no longer capable. Then I bought a Leopold lrx 1200 or what ever even though what I really wanted was a couple hundred more. It's not up to par for me.

So I'm $600 into range finders that don't make the cut, I need to spend another 600 to get one that will satisfy, so I'll be into range finders for 1200 by the time I'm there, when I shoulda just spent 600 the very first time.

I wonder why is it that difficult to use a search? This question has been asked numerous times. Here is a fresh thread 4 days ago.

Yes I agree. But according to the rules here, I have to post in forums before I am considered a "contributer". Yes I can search, as every question has been answered in the past, but then I would never get any "posts" credited to me.
I am reading alot and learning alot and since I'm new, I don't want to comment on others posts with incorrect info and possibly point others in the wrong direction. I always go by the saying, "it's better to keep your mouth shut and have others thing you're and idiot, then open your mouth and remove all doubt".
Sorry if I piss off regulars or other very informed and experienced "gun nutz" with my newbie questions.

I have a Bushnell Elite 1500. I paid 450.00 for it back in 2007. It works well for hunting ranges and is simple to use.
I've never used it to range game, it only seems to be useful after the shot or when setting up a range on crown land.
It is nice to have but not necessary.

Don't sweat it. I also went through a bushnell and a "good" Leupold before I got a Leica used for about what the bushnell was new. If you have a US shipping address there is a used Leica 1600 on EBAY for $279 buy it now...

I just picked up a Bushnell from their new "Prime" line. Claims to range reflective targets out to 1300yrds.

This is a very open ended question, it really depends on what you need it for. I want to range steel plates out to 1000yrds so that why I went with the Prime, not too worried about the non reflective range which could be a deal breaker for others.

Look at the SIG ones. The guys from Applied Ballistics also wrote a book on range finders. They did thorough testing on a a whole bunch of different ones and compared them all. It’s an interesting read on how they actually work, why certain ones work better than others, and what conditions make them not work as well for you.

I got a Bushnel for Christmas a couple years ago, and it didn't work from new. I returned it for a refund and still havn't replaced it, but when I do it will be with a Leica. Ive read a few reviews on them, and they seem to work as intended.

I have a Nikon prostaff 7i and it’s been going strong for three years now, friends of mine have Vortex and Sig rangefinders. I’ve tried them both and they work great and were in the same general range as my 7i.
