I know there are a kazilion threads on this, but this problem inparticular is one that I have no idea how to fix.

I bought my 597 2 years ago. Had problems from the start. Jam issues. After many mad Rem calls, I paid shipping to send it to Quebec. After 6 weeks it returned, zero jam problems.

Now it shoots EVERYWHERE. No consistency, no groupings at all. At 25 yards with red dot, iron sights and scope, groupings of 4+inches. Not really groupings even. I keep my rifles clean. I tried different ammunition, all with the same results. Barrell and rifling are crisp and clean. Any ideas?:runaway:

I know that if a Rem. 700 shoots all over the place, one of the problems would check for is oil underneath the action or bedding. Try removing the barrel/action from the stock to see if there is any oil there! Try to keep it nice and dry! Hope that helps!

Took the entire bloody thing apart several times and cleaned everything. I have no idea wtf is going on, unless my barrel is toast.

Is the crown ok? 4 Inches is alot for a rimfire. You said you tried different sighting options. i'm sure you checked, but are he screws to your base, rings AND iron's tight? That's the only thing that I can think of that would be that drastic in a .22 at .22 range.

Two years ago, I bought a Rem 597 from Wholesale Sports topped with a new Tasco target scope....did a ten shot break-in with Rem ammo. Shot 5 five shot groups at 25M. The groups were 1 -2"...and the rifle jambed about every third shot. The following day, I took the targets, cartridges that were damaged in the jambs, and the rifle back to Wholesale and to show them something was wrong with the rifle (and or scope). The chap at the counter said they had several unhappy Rem 597 customers and asked if I wanted the rifle replaced or my money back. I took the cash.

I'm no gunsmith but everything seems fine as far as I can see... but it obviously isn't. I've sunk a fair chunk of change into it too... 4 factory mags, 2 high caps, browning bipod, 2 scopes, muzzle break... nothing fixed the jamming except for a smith in Quebec... random groupings still... :(

Finger tight only with those rails, I also run the gun without any oil except a little bit of dri-lube on the rails.

I bought a 597 HMR from someone here that was doing that....cheap. He could NOT get that thing to group better than 1-2", so he sold me his problem"...and for 25% of retail I was eilling to try and fix it.

Turns out that the forward action screw was about 3 threads too long, and was pushing up against the bottom of the barrel and causing it to "wobble" :D

20 seconds with the grinder to shorten the screw, started shooting 1/2".

I've never had a FTF or FTE with my 597WMR and - with well over 1000 rounds through it - I've always been able to consistently place each shot within the 9 and 10 rings (mostly 10) of a 25m target.

There's nothing wrong with that rifle...

Had a discussion with a gunsmith short while back,he informed me that the 597 made a couple of years back had a problem with the stainless barrels not being made properly. The warranty depot in Que. was replacing the barrels. You might want to check with your local smith instead of the retailer and see if he heared of this problem.

I had similar results. I have since cut a bit off each action screw and when I bolt the action into the stock I really crank it in there tight. Now with cci blazer, fed champion and rem thunderbolts, I can get about 3/4 of an inch at 50 regularly.
