Beater rifles that just plain work well.

1943 8x57. Think it was used as a pry bar and a club before I took the little orphan in. Lots of time got a new life.
Pick is from when I had it up for sale. But was having pre sellers remorse.

That's a really cool stock! Do that yourself of does someone make those?

After digging this one out of the back of the safe for a picture, I got to thinking that most of us probably have one or two. :)

This old Remington 721 in 300 H&H isn't much to look at, but still starts 180 gr Partitions at 3000+ fps, and delivers them into less than five inches at 300 meters.

The scope is just as old as the rifle, a Lyman All American.

The recoil pad is not so old, a double flip flop that makes the rifle feel like shooting a 270. Reminds me of the Ugly 9.3X62, and works just as well.

I love that rifle. I really dig the 721 and 722 rifles. Plus in 300 H&H. You're making me jealous.

View attachment 238770 Remington model 34. Has a very rich history. My dad bought it off a trapper in the Robson valley when he fell ill and was passing away. The old fella would get his dog to tree black bears then he would shoot them outta the tree with this 22. He put a peep sight on and refinished the stock. It got used dads trapline for quite a few years after that. Now it’s a family heirloom. It’s a great action, cycles more reliably than any other 22 I have ever owned.

I have an old Cooey 64B that I bought for $40 several decades ago that fills the bill. Like me it's been kicked, bit and trampled over the years but just keeps going. It gets hosed out with Brake Klean when it FTF and then it's goes some more.

I'd say my old 444 makes the cut too. Nothing to look at and bin through the wringer but has always been smooth as silk and puts em where you point it.

I have the same K98 with Bubba's hacksawed former laminate stock and a mint barrel! Oh to club Bubba. D+T for Weaver bases and a side receiver sight.Shoots less than a 1/2' group at 100 yards with Win factory 170gr.Hiking bear repellent.

All DIY. The stock is the original laminate from the factory. Hard as iron. Had to use a belt sander on it to ruff out the shape. The palm swell in the grip gives it a really nice feel. Took the barrel down on a drill press, cut t at 19". Was over 9lb to start, 7lb 9oz if I remember right? scoped with 5 in the mag, 8 (4 each side) on the stock.

Any close up's of the butt ammo holder?

Best I have, showing the spare battery pouch for fire fly type scope.

Not that old or cheap. Use a tc encore with 18.5" brl in 375hhh as my beater for hunting. Seem to grab it the most as it's short and handy and can be stored easy

My beater is a commercial Lee Enfield sporter in 303. It gets used as a back up rifle for my hunts and as a loaner.

The scope is mounted very low. Comfortable to use.

It makes a good loaner because it is dead simple to use.

I have 2 that I consider good ol' beater guns.
A Savage 340 in .30-30 , it just seems to hit what I aim at and is light and short. Codeword Handy.
A Savage 219 also in .30-30. It is a single shot rifle with a 26" barrel. Because it is a single shot with no "action", it is still short and handy with the long barrel.
I know I have more guns in the safes that I am forgetting about, but these seem to come out a lot , especially as training and loaner guns.

That scope is a beater as well. Have the same one. It's been on and off just about every rifle I own and some I don't. Is my go to check out the new gun scope or gun/scope not working right checker.
