Although I'm a big fan of peep sights on a bush/dogging gun, my near vision has changed a bit and I'm thinking of a scope. Should I use a low power (1.5X) standard scope, or should look at something else (e.g. red dot, holo sight)? Any suggestions?

I think a low power scope will work well for you, and there is no concern about batteries. If you get one of the better ones, the light gathering qualities for twilight shooting are quite good.

There's a good deal on the EE right now for a Leupold VariX III 1.5x5. I have two of these scopes and they are perfect for close hunting.

What type of rifle do you use?

.

I have a 1.5-4.5 X 32 Bushnell Elite. They are great, I do wish i had bought a 1.5-6 when I had the chance. the only real advantage of the 6X is having the little extra when sighting in.

Anyway, the one I have will be up for sale soon, I have it listed with a rifle on the EE right now.

yep - the best brush scope for the money i think. For doggin the VariXll 1x4 would be an excellent one to I think.

Red dot sights are very poor for any type of precision shooting, quick acuisition yes, but not very precise. Go for a VX III 1.5-5x20 or VXII 1-4x20.

I'm interested in checking out a Leupold Prismatic. :D

I have a B&L 1.5x5 that works very well & a 3200 1.5x4.
If I was going to try another scope I'd be very tempted to try a staright 1x shotgun scope. Most central ont brush-bush hunting is done at ranges of
50 ft to 50 yds.

IMO one of the best bush scopes are Leupold VXIII 1.5-5X20mm .
My second choice would be the Leupold VXII 1-4X20 I have both and they seem to work great. I also have a Burris FII 1.75-5x20 that seems to work fine. I like my Leupolds but if you don't want to spend that kind of $ try the Burris I set the burris on my Ruger mini 30 . Shot two bucks with it last year. I hope this helps.

Nikon makes a Monarch Gold 30mm tube 1.5-6x42mm which would be a great bush and transition scope. I shoot the Tasco Titan 1.5-6x42mm on my 11-87 slug gun and have found the magnification and duplex style reticle fantastic for leading running game and feild of veiw. I have however blown one of these up from the recoil of the high volocity 12g sabot slugs and had to get a replacement through warrantee. If I was to replace that Titan tomorrow it would be with the Nikon Monarch Gold...or even Leupold in 2-7x33 VXII wide duplex. The larger objective lenses really help in the lower light of the bush.

Go with a large objective lens if you can, makes it easy to find your target.

My vote is for the VX III 1.5x5x20, have 2 of them, one on a 300WM, the other on 22LR, when set on 1.5 everything past the end of the barrel is in focus, in fact you can see the end of the barrel in your sight picture.

Actually the size of the objective only affects light transmission, not field of view. The higher the magnification the less field of view and the less light transmission, hence the large objectives on high power scopes.

I've got a couple of 1.5x5 and three 2x7 Leupolds.

I like them all, but today I tried out a 1.75x6 VXIII. It's the best of the bunch. Nice scope!
