I got a phone call from the landowner this morning. He shot a coyote and asked me if I could skin it out and tan it for him. I did one in the past for him and he really liked it.... So I said yes of course I would..... He said he left the coyote in the fence line....
So thinking I needed to go get the coyote after work at the farm that I might as well go home and bring along my coyote gear and give it a try myself, why waste the trip right?
I got to the farm around 4:15 and setup close to his dead coyote. I call for about 20 minutes or so then decided (as the sun was going down) to walk over to the other end of the farm (500yds?) and call toward the other farmers bush in hopes of calling one in.
I setup the caller and decoy and started screaming out... after about 15 minutes or so this female coyote comes out from the fence line and starts making her way toward the decoy and the low volume dying rabbit sound....
My gun was resting on my shooting sticks pointing right into the middle of the field, all I had to do was wait for her to get lined up (walk across right in front of my setup). Once she reached the crosshairs, I wolfed her to stop and with a 75 yd broadside shot she was down....
Then the real work began, taking them home and skinning them out, his is the one on the left (spine shot-will have to do some sewing) mine is the one on the right. Both females and both about the same size, looks like this past spring pups..

Most excellent !!
Always interested in reading the story and the diagrams.
Found a 20 pound raccoon this afternoon with what appeared to be no damage, but local trapper was out and I didnt know when he would be back, so tossed it into the bushes for the coyotes to feed upon and the hope they will try and play frogger crossing the highway in the near future.
Thanks for sharing fratri.

That sounds like a fun hunt. Are there lots of rabbits in your region? I ask because here they have been scarce for some time and I'm not getting any action on my cottontail distress calls.

I don't think so, I have not shot a rabbit in years...It's usually not the sound that gets them, it's more along the lines of the setup. (I think the sound is secondary)
Good luck

Thank you for sharing that experience. Thank you for also describing very clearly with your photographs how are you accomplished what you did. Looking forward to reading many more of your posts. Thank you.

Cheers, Barney

Looks like fun . If I'm right your shooting a Savage rifle ? I was just wondering what caliber is she in ? I saw the sticker on the stock .

You are right...it is a savage in a .223......with factory combo stock scope.... I will need to change up the scope one of these days but for now, it is working....

Why do you have the fresh pelts on the stretchers hair side out?

Aside from the photo op the OP stated: Some animals like coyote, wolf, fisher, fox are only partially dried inside out and they are turned while the hide is still pliable and drying finished with the fur out. For a couple reasons, other case skinned pelts are wanted fur in, and in the case of otter it's by necessity as excess handling and incorrect handling will singe the fur.

Frank~I enjoy your posts immensely...even though they're a constant reminder of how I'm not making enough of an effort hunting coyotes! lol Just need to put my first one down, I suspect I'd be out there more often.

Cool hunt.
Anybody have a link or any advice on how to tan your own fur? I've tried brain tanning a deer hide, wondering how much of the process is similar.
