Hi,

My CZ 512 Ametican in 22 wmr will be in Montreal tomorrow ! Yeah !
The more I read about scopes, the less I seem to know...
What would be a good scope for varmint hunting and target shooting at up to 100 yards ?
On a Ruger 22 wmr, I have a Vortex 4x16 Diamondback HP that I have bought used. I like it, mostly for the fact that it's easy to see bullets holes with it...
Should I stay with Vortex or try Nikon or something else ? Parallax adjustement for me is a must...
My budget would be up to the gun's value or $ 600. or less... I don't mind buying used if waranty is still on...

Thank you for your wisdom !

Just saw that you were looking for adjustable parallax, I just purchased one of the new P3 series from Nikon (Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 AO) for my CZ 455, they retail for $250 plus tax and are an excellent option

I'm thinking of picking up a 512 myself. For a scope I'd consider the Vortex Diamondback Tactical FFP.
I had a diamondback on a 17hmr before. Great glass for the $.

Hey Howard~can you post a link to where you found them at that price? Not doubting you...just might be interested myself! :)

To the OP~I normally like higher-powered scopes, but a decent 3-9 is lots for varmint hunting out to 125 yards. I spent a summer hunting groundhogs with 22WMR and a 3-9~the most low-tech/enjoyable varmint hunting experience. Centerfires (ever since) have been awesome too...but nothing beats a capable rimfire for simplicity!

Bought the scope from Dante in Montreal, excellent scope and the EFR feature is fantastic

The Nikon Part number is 16606

The .22WMR is perfect for 100-125 yard varminting, and a bit beyond as well. A 3-9 scope would be about perfect. Why would you want to bother with a parallax adjustment? You're not going to want to shoot at 20 yards; that's territory for your .22lr or a good pellet rifle. Likewise, you are not going to be shooting at many hundreds of yards. The bulk of you usage will probably be at the ranges for which almost every standard centerfire riflescope is already pre-set for parallax. Spend your money on glass, not gadgets.

HGBMTL...

When I read you, I knew what scope I needed !
I called Dante and bought the same Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 you suggested !
As much as I wouldn't buy guns in Quebec, I want Dante to survive... Buying that scope from them is a mean to help them in these difficult times.

As far as I know the CZ 512 has a 11 mm scope rail. I asked Dante to select good solid bases for this 1" new scope. If a DIP base is prefered, so be it !

I like things to go fast and efficiently, exactly like this scope selection !

Thank you !

I have a wooden 22lr one and put a Bushnel TX25 red dot on it. Throws baseball sized groups at 100m. Good enough for general field use.

Otherwise a 1-4x or 2-7x depending how fancy you want to go. For me the little red dot does everything the rifle would practically need to.

Glad to be of help Walter, I'm sure you'll love the scope, send me a PM when you get it and let me know your impressions, Howard

Once again Dante is a great shop and deserves to be supported, it's been my go to place for shooting supplies for the past 30 years

Howard,

When I was thirteen, after delivering many many newspapers, after obtaining my hunting certificate, I finally convinced my father that it was time for me to have a .22 . My father was a city boy who never had any interest in hunting... So the day came and my father and I went to Dante. I knew exactly what I wanted... We came out with me the very proud owner of a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge with a 30" full choke barrel... As much as I loved my father, he never knew the diffetence between a .22 an a 12 gauge. That was 1974. 45 years ago and I still love my Wingmaster...

So Patrick from Dante helped me choose CZ rings and that does it. I will be picking up my scope and rings tonight and will be ready for the 512 arrival tomorrow !

Thank you all again !

Howard,

I went to Dante to pick-up my Nikon scope. Patrick took care of me. I hadn't read your message yet so your salutations were not transfered... Sorry..

Yesterday I received my CZ 512 American in 22 wmr from London Bulls Eye. It arrived very well packed exactly when it was stated to. Before buying this 512, I had never seen one. Upon opening the gun's box, quality and workmanship are evident. The wood is beautiful, quite dark wirh nice features. The metal is very black with no defaults.

To me, this 512 is a beautiful gun in an utilarian way. It's not as beautiful or as integrated as some other CZ or Browning guns I have seen.. It is a full size gun, not a toy. There is some heft to it, solid...

I'm sure that getting to know this gun better will for sure lead me to appreciate it more and more...

I have pre-installed the Nikon scope using CZ medium bases. It seems very sturdy. Since my 512 American does not have sight, small CZ bases might have been better.

Scope wise again the Nikon is a quality piece. Saturday I shall shoot this gun and complete final scope positonning. I just hope that I will be able to see bullet's hole at 100 yards on targets...

To be followed !

Thank you !
