H&K Mark 23 SOCOM 45 !!! (Pics)

Not to rain on your parade, but I came into this thread expecting to see the actual SOCOM version, not the civilian model. The price difference is a whole lot different if you manage to get your hands on one of those, as they havent been replaced, nor will they anytime soon.
Still a nice looking piece...but a misleading title.

I don't think there is any meaningful difference between the two. Besides, HK refers to the Mark 23 as a SOCOM. Here's a quote about the Mark 23 from the HK website:

"THE ULTIMATE SERVICE GUN OF THE US ARMY SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND. The best equipment for the best units. After the toughest comparative trials of the US Army Special Operations Command, the MARK 23 defeated all competitors. It was adopted under the designation MK 23 MODEL.O US SOCOM."

Thats right. I believe the military model was referred to as " Model 0" anyway.

Aside from the stamp, nobody can tell anyways without a machinists micrometer. Go get it laser engraved, as "property of the US military' as I understand the model O is, and see if that gives you any grief with the local men in blue!

Marketing. That's the only reason. Very easy plunder to fall into.

Sorry to say, no...not so far anyway.

On the website it states that it WILL cycle 100% with the following ammunition (Listing 4 to 5 different brands) The ammo I used was not on the "list"..I used WinUSA 230 gr. FMJ (White box)...it fired but the spent casing got caught in the action. I guess the weight of the can interfers with the motion/energy needed to unlock/cycle the action. MFI said +P ammo is recommended to cycle properly

One of the ones that will 100% cycle according to MFI is RemUMC 230 gr. MC...I'm going to give that a try as soon as LeBarons gets some in.

I shoot the SOCOM without it on anyway, I just got it for looks/sh*ts & giggles, but it does fit on super tight, the threads are excellently machined and it gives it excellent weight distribution while aiming...you also still have a 100% clear sight picture and the finish/marking are flawless.

Total price shipped to my door = $213 CDN + $20 customs ($160 USD on their website)

Hmm, this is interesting because real cans are usually used in conjunction with subsonic ammo (which of course is nowhere near +P). I'm no ballistics expert, so perhaps anyone can explain to me what makes a real can different from a fake one as far as the effect on the slide’s ability to cycle in concerned?

The fake can is actually way lighter than the real-deal, and is shorter...6.9" instead of 7.5" inches long....also the real Knights sound suppressor has an internal "booster" that enables the gun to cycle consistanly.

I'm no expert on the internals design of sound suppressors, but with the fake can needs more power/energy to cycle correctly.

The real thing has a spring loaded piston in the back end (commonly called a Recoil Booster or Neilson Device) that causes the can to be "unlocked" from the barrel during recoil. This allows the barrel to move backwards properly and allow the pistol to cycle. Then the can is pulled back into position by the spring as the pistol slide moves forward into battery.

This is what a Neilson Device looks like

Some silencer have the recoil booster inside the tube and some have it mounted on the back of the silencer. Here you can see the recoil booster mounted on the back of the silencer.

There is one silencer in production that works reasonably well without a booster. That is the .45 cal Gemtec Blackside and the reason it doesn't need a booster is it is very light. There is a lot of discussion/#####ing about just how reliable the can is.

Nothing smaller than .45 has enough recoil impulse to cycle with a boosterless can. Trust me, I've tried. :(

You could drill a small vent on the bottom.
Drill a hole in the bottom of what? The manufacturer of the fake cans claims their products are made to be tamper proof and have been approved by the ATF as being such. Apparently they use very thin walled tube that will fall apart if machined or screwed with.

Not to mention that modifying a fake silencer would undoubtedly result in some sound reduction which would make it into a real silencer and as such be HIGHLY fricken illegal.
