Anybody know some decent long range spots near Kelowna or Vernon? Just getting into this game and am looking for spots that stretch out to about 1000m. I'm a member of the Vernon fish/game club, but our range only goes out to 400m which is starting to get boring. I've heard good things about Trinity long range, however $20/hour is hard to justify when we have so much crown land around here...

You just gotta get in your truck and explore, lots of crown land out there to take advantage of. Google earth and a backroads map book are your friend, also check out the regional district maps online. Easy to see what’s private and what not through their maps.

How do you like the Vernon rifle range is it usually busy?I’m a member but never used it always rifle shoot on crown land. Just use the range for my handgun

I'm a member there as well, love the range. Very rarely is the rifle range super busy. Many times I've gone on a sat and nobody is there. As much as i love having the range to myself so much, with our membership numbers it should be busier.
Heard there are some longer spots around procter lake but haven't been there myself.

Even where I am outside 100 mile we gotta drive quite a ways to find a truly "appropriate" location to shoot 1000M or beyond. Ya never know where and when someone is gonna pop outta the bush on a horse, atv or snowmobile.
Some things to consider for sure and at our spot there is only one road in and no forestry roads or trails adjacent or beyond. We are shooting into a mountain side that is 1400m from the bench.
There is no chance that an accident could occur down range and due to the location we can safely know that there are no other crown land users in the area.

There is a gong set up Kelly main, between Armstrong and Falkland. My rangefinder puts the shooting spots as far as 1600 meters.
I have been up there several times this summer but only reached out as far as 1000mtrs.

Shooting up the cut for the power line, yes, but I'm always leery of ATV's coming over the hill into the line of fire if that is where you are talking about Sam.

Rye_one the population centre is not large here....

OP if you scout around up Noble (keep left instead of going up the FSR to the Vernon Range) you might find some suitable spots as well. Same goes for King Eddy.

You just have to drive around.

whatever you find, to be a responsible shooter, make sure you know the area. Hang out and hike around the spot. What may seem ideal might be adjacent to a trail or a cabin or who knows.

When you go out to look for a long range spot try and bring a buddy with another truck so one of you can stay at the firing line and one guy can go down and check for hidden trails or roads. I find that scouting for a long range spot this way let's you make sure sight lines for shooting are still good and the area is safe to shoot in. Two way radios also help so you can communicate with your buddy as your scouting the area. I'm sure in the area your in you should be able to find a spot that's at least 1000 m.

Thanks everybody for the advice. I've checked out a few spots on King Eddy and Deafy's Creek, but with so many people I was apprehensive to start shooting. I'll focusing on using google earth to look for spots, possibly in the Monashees where there are fewer people.

As has been mentioned Backroads Map Books show the ATV, walking/hiking trails in the area. They are fairly well used all around Vernon > Becker, King Eddy, Aberdeen. Active logging will put a kybosh on a lot of areas.

Isn't there a semi-private range (you book your time to use it, not cheap but very well equipped) that goes to 1000m outside Lumby?

That's the $20/hr Trinity Valley Range he mentioned in his first post.

Of course. Missed that part somehow...

In that case, get a backroads map book and start exploring. Google Earth is also your friend. I can think of a spot or two where you could stretch out past 400m east of Mabel Lake, but there is probably something closer too.

Ive been on the search myself for a good spot, even sold my truck and Im building a suzuki sidekick now with a VW diesel in it for some overland capabilities looking for those sweet long range spots. Good luck!
