Hey, guys! I'm a big newb to ar rifles. I wasn't super interested in them because of restricted status. now i'm finding out about several NR versions but finding a lot of conflicting and unhelpful info in my research so i was hoping you good folks might be able to help cpear up some questions for me.

1. i've been looking at maccabee and alberta tactical and wonder if these are the only options to getting a real NR AR?
2. are the maccabee and alberta tactical real NR AR's?
3.alberta tactical says it sells a reciever with forward assist but i haven't been able to find pictures of it. is it true? what does it look like?
4. will any old AR 15 parts fit? is there anything special i will have to consider?
5. any brand or store reccomendations? where should i look for parts online? i'm looking for accuraccy but i probably won't be doing competitions as i don't make my own ammo, so i'd like decent parts but not if it is going to cost thousands of dollars.
6. can i follow the instructions on how to build an ar-15 or is it a completepy different kettle of fish?
7. is it worth the money and the hassle or should i just buy a wk180c?

sorry about how much there is to unpack here. just looking for info i had a hard time finding myself. much love to the forum, thanks in advance.

p.s. money is somewhat of an obkect but i just got a new job that pay pretty decently so saving up isnt out of the question.

edit: can i just buy a lower from alberta tactical and get the rest on the cheap? or are they incompatible/ illegal?

Year waiting list for either NR receiver sets, they take AR parts, depends on how much you $$ you want to spend - im at $3500 for my ATRS build and its being done "cheap"

really? at 3500 dollars you must be using decent parts, no? you could just buy a brand new ar 15 and strip the parts off of it for less money if you were going really cheap.

what sort of stuff did you put on yours? do you regret it or something?

$1000 for the set.
$600 should get you a decent barrel,Handguard,G/B and brake.
$80 for a LPK including trigger.
$80 for a but stock,buffer tube,buffer and spring.
$100 for a BCG

So you can do it for under $2000.
Most of these expensive builds are for weight savings

well thats cool to know. i thought it would be too much to ask for a gereal price break down so thanks for that.

The Maccabee and the ATRS are your only options HOWEVER from experience I would strongly recommend the ATRS receiver

2. are the maccabee and alberta tactical real NR AR's?

There is no such thing as a real NR AR. They are both proprietary receiver sets and are completely incompatible with AR receivers. They were however designed to be compatible with AR15 parts.

3.alberta tactical says it sells a reciever with forward assist but i haven't been able to find pictures of it. is it true? what does it look like?

The forward assist uppers haven't entered into production yet but they will look similar to the upper seen here on their AT-15 restricted receiver set

AFAIK the only incompatible part with the ATRS receivers are the latchless charging handles. Everything else is good to go.

The Maccabee receivers are compatible with most parts with the exception of some trigger groups. Plus there have been tollerance issues making parts compatibility an issue. Most of these tollerance issues are seemingly resolved on the latest sets released however due to my experiences with an early set I wouldn't take my chances buying another.

Many of the vendors on this site sell a variety of AR15 parts. Take your time and check them out.

Also Brownell's is a good place to order from.

6. can i follow the instructions on how to build an ar-15 or is it a completepy different kettle of fish?

If you can follow instructions AND have the proper assembly tools it's basically the same thing building one of the NR receiver sets as it is to build an AR

7. is it worth the money and the hassle or should i just buy a wk180c?

That's for you to decide.

You would have to buy a complete receiver set as just a lower (from either MDI or ATRS) will NOT mate up to an AR15 upper. That is how they received NR status.

However you CAN buy a complete AR15 upper and strip the parts off of it (providing the barrel is longer than 18.5") and reassemble those parts onto the receiver for the NR set.

Hey Jiff, when you say latchkess CH, do that mean that my Raptor won’t work?
I never knew there was such a thing as latchless:)

And I don’t recall ATRS saying you needed a latchless CH

I recently wen't down this path. Alberta Tactical Rifle was amazing at helping me....specifically Shaun. Honestly with out them it would have been a complete #### show. Even as hard as I tried to keep it straight one change can make some parts not be suited best for your build. This is where ATR's experience was invaluable. I have learned a lot and will likely build my own AR next time.

Google Strike Ind latchless CH. Basically uses springs to keep it in place during action cycling instead of the external latch. Doesn't work in a ATRS MS upper because the take down slot had to be relocated to allow for the rearward takedown protrusion

Hey Brian,

Your Raptor charging handle is fine. I have one for my MS as well.

What I mean by latchless charging handle is one like the Strike Industries that has the two little tabs on the side that "snap" into the charging handle track to hold. This style is the one I meant was incompatible.

Bahahahahaha.

You can build an excellent quality, MOA, all american-made parts (no chinese crap) Sporter set for below $1700.

You guys and your billion $ builds are cracking me up.

I was also thinking you could get lower than the $2000 , I originally suggested.
But , where can you get a decent 18.5 barrel that shoots MOA or better for $250 -$300

Maybe your definition of cheap and his definition of cheap are different?

Who gives AF how much someone spends on their build. I'm not even bothering to tabulate my costs. All that matters is that I end up with what I want when I'm done.

If I'm happy with mine, he's happy with his and you're happy with yours, once again, who gives AF?

You seem to forget this isn't your thread nor is it about you (narcissistic much?). It's about OP wanting to know how much he has to spend to get in the game.
