Well I finally decided to upgrade my hunting rifle. Had a Ruger American for the last 5 years and I need something with a bit more class now ;)

So after weeks of research I settled on the Tikka T3x Laminated Stainless and a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm

Also thinking of ATLASWORXS BOTTOM METAL and the Leupold 2 piece rifle mount.

Anyone have any other suggestions for me before I start buying this stuff.

The Tikka T3x is my rifle play platform this year....my suggestion would be a set of warne optima rings (clamp directly to the tikka dovetail) as, IMHO, they best preserve the lines/class of the rifle as well as afford the lowest possible mounting. I got mine from canadabrass, they are also available from brownells.

I also quite like the synthetic T3x stock, specifically the optionality of the pistol grip. I changed all mine out to the more vertical style grip as I find it more comfortable to shoot from a variety of field positions which is what I like to practice.

Cheers,

Brobee

Stainless is a good choice as is the rifle. The Atlasworx floorplate for the original plastic mags works perfect, much better than some other brands. I have not had a T3 laminated stock yet but presume it is quite heavy. I would check bedding if not bedded then I would pillar bed the action as well as the floor plate. Makes a big difference over time.

Darn fine choice I'd say in both firearm and optic! Tikka performance is another option for bottom metal upgrade. Not sure of differences in actual product or price but I have one and it's a good upgrade. I really like Talley Lightweights for rings on anything possible - might be something to look into if your interested...they've always been bullet proof for me.

+1 on the Talleys

Have a look at the Mountain Tactical OEM bottom metal replacement. Looks less beefy and a little more refined than the Atlas Works. I prefer Burris XTreme Tactical bases and Burris Signature Rings. Mountain Tactical also has some cool aluminum bolt shrouds, even one with a Canadian flag.

Tikka rifles are great. If only they made 'em with a hinged floorplate. The plastic single stack detachable magazine (on a hunting rifle) is a deal breaker for me.

My father in law has three tikka t3x, two for target shooting and one for hunting. He kept the stock barrel on the hunting one. He really likes it, seems like a good choice

I prefer a detach magazine on my hunting rifles, guess it depends on how you hunt as I find it much easier to load/unload with a mag especially when getting out of vehicles or on/off atv.

The Talley rings are a good suggestion. I went with the DNZ one piece mount myself, for something different, and I think I prefer it over the Talleys. Nice scope choice as well. I thought about the VX-5 but ended up going with the VX-3i.

What chambering is it?

I've got a T3x in the config you are looking at (different scope) in 6.5x55. It has been a great setup. Dropped the rifle end of last hunting season and the Leupold rings held securely. No shift in zero when I checked it afterwards.

The plastic bottom plate is the only issue I have with it - have had mags stick part way inserted and a round does not get picked up. Not nice to hear that 'click' sound then nothing.......

Unless you are set on AICS mags then I would suggest the Mountain Tactical OEM plate as well. Don't have one but have been looking at that model myself.

I put that same optic on my MV and can honestly say that you won't be disappointed with it.

It's light, IIRC it's only 19oz. The glass is bright and clear and performs great right up until almost total darkness. The elevation turret clicks decent and tracks 100%.

The only thing I wish is that it didn't have a capped windage turret but that's just personal preference.

A buddy of mine has the same rifle in 30-06 and went with the Mountain Tactical Gen 2 OEM replacement bottom metal. I liked it so much that I ordered 2 sets for my Tikka's, which should be here in a week or so, as well as 2 knurled bolt handles and trigger springs. They make fine products.

Thanks guys for all the replies. So i decided to go with the Mountain Tactical OEM plate, 2 Tikka ( TrG-22) 10 round mags for when Im punching paper and the Warn rings ( Non QD )

The only thing I wish is that it didn't have a capped windage turret but that's just personal preference.

Does the top turret lock in place when at zero?

Ditch the laminate stock.

I hate plastic stocks with a passion.

Yes the elevation turret has a locking zero stop. You have to push the little button in to dial up but when you dial back down to zero it stops and the button automatically pops back out and locks it again. It's a pretty slick system.

It's basically impossible for the turret to accidentally get moved from zero when you're packing it around.
