I am help picking a new hunting / target shooting gun.

Looking for polymer stock. 308 caliber. Detachable mags (hopefully with 5 or 10 round mags) and iron sights. 20inch barrel would be ideal.

I looked at the scout guns, but don't like how to scope is put for forward on the rifle.

Price is under $1500. Any suggestions ?

Mossberg scout in 7.62, the norinco m305 are both good, my choices I have a passion against Ruger haha, but I like the Winchester XPR bolt action in 308 as my hunting rifle, it was the first rifle I bought myself ever haha, took a moose 2 years ago with it too

You want a Bergara HMR. It's stupid accurate and designed for exactly what you're looking for. Very seriously consider it. Arguably one of the most accurate out of the box rifles. And the HMR is designed as a hunting/competition hybrid. HMR stands for hunter match rifle. You can't go wrong, be sure to look into them. Endless praise for it on YouTube. Took the Bergara HMR 308 to my 1st ever match last year total newb. Walked away with 4th place. Put the boots to much more $$$ rifles.

$1500 and takes 10 round AICS mags which is also a big selling point.

Tikka Battue meets your specifications. The Ruger scout allows you to mount a scope in the standard receiver location if that's what you want. If you want a non-bolt action the browning blr or a Remington 7600/760 would also work for you.

I second this. If they came with a 24 inch barrel I'd already have one in 308.

He wants one in 20" so another check mark for his list at least. You can hit 1000 with the 20". And sometimes the shorter barrels are more accurate in theory. Less whip. I get 2610 fps with 43.0 of IMR 4895 and ELDM 168's out of that rifle. 20" is a little nicer for hunting which he intends to do with it.

I'm always interested in reading a thread like this. Hunting is one of my hobbies and it makes me feel eager to get a trophy at the end of the day. By the way, I'm here to help. I read an article about .308 semi-automatic rifles that are suitable for hunting, you can check it here: https://gunnewsdaily.com/best-308-semi-automatic-rifles/.

I hope it helps. Let me know what you think. :)

Those HMR rifles look pretty slick if you will be hunting from a stand or blind mostly. But they are almost ten pounds so less ideal for hiking and in Bush.

The Ruger Scout allows a rear mount scope or you can just put a full length XS rail on it and mount scope wherever you like

They are not light no. Depends on how serious you are about the target shooting part. B14 rifles are also available in more traditional hunting stock designs as well.

Mauser M18, Steyr ProHunter and THB, Weatherby Vanguard. All under $1500. Remington of course make the 700 and 783 series with/without heavy bbls.

There are good options here , I like the Tikka
