Help Picking. 308 rifle.

Ruger scout and just mount the scope normally using the supplied rings. That's how I run mine. I took the rail off too. It's still a compact magazine fed rifle, no need to mount the scope forward if you don't like it.

You want a Bergara HMR. It's stupid accurate and designed for exactly what you're looking for. Very seriously consider it. Arguably one of the most accurate out of the box rifles. And the HMR is designed as a hunting/competition hybrid. HMR stands for hunter match rifle. You can't go wrong, be sure to look into them. Endless praise for it on YouTube. Took the Bergara HMR 308 to my 1st ever match last year total newb. Walked away with 4th place. Put the boots to much more $$$ rifles.

$1500 and takes 10 round AICS mags which is also a big selling point.

Thanks for this , helped me see the light

OP asks for $1500, AICS mags and synthetic stock and people recommending Norc and Mossberg junk lol.

Bergara HMR is a good pick.

LOL, easy there, I have owned norcs and mossberg rifles. Never had an issue with any of them, they were good guns. As for the OP's price range, there's lots of options. If it was my money I would be looking at either a tikka or a browning. If you wanted to spend less then yes, buy a norc m14 or a mossberg patriot( the deer I have shot with never complained about being shot with either gun) Another option is the Remington 783, another entry level gun that the gun snobs laugh at. I know a few guys that own them and swear by them. I shot a deer last fall with a 783, bang, flop at 200yrds with the factory scope. At the end of the day, your best to get out to some gun shops and handle as many guns as you can, ignore all the gun snobs and know it alls, find a gun that you like and feels good for you.

CZ 557 Ranger is one helluva rifle. Very good value in an extremely good looking package.
It does have a wood stock, however.
Savage 11 Hoghunter comes to mind and is inexpensive, but does not have a detachable magazine.
Tikkas are consistent.
Any of the 3 above, I guess.

If we're talking about entry level $5-600 rifles sure. But we're not. Comparing them to Sako, Tikka, CZ, Browning Xbolt and others, Norc and Mossberg are junk. Just feel the slop of the bolt on a Mossberg. Looser than a two dollar hooker.

Makes me laugh when folks recommend the Norinco M305 for a deer rifle. It's a battle rifle, pain and simple, NOT a sporting rifle. They are heavy, not as well suited to a scope as a sporting rifle, do not handle well, and the big goofy mags do not offer easy carry with one hand. I owned one way back when that I purchased for deer hunting. It lasted just one trip to the range where I quickly realized how much it lacked as a sporting rifle. I sold it toot sweet post that range trip. Good riddance.

The other two suggestion you offer would be far better suited for the task at hand. The 783s have a good report on-line. I've owned two and liked them. I've never owned a Mossberg so cannot directly comment on them, but based on some on-line reviews is a gun that I would avoid until I could see otherwise.

There is more then one person on this forum that use m305 for deer hunting, so its not that uncommon. I agree that 305 are heavy, the rest is a matter of preference( scope, bipods, etc). I personally dont find the mags to be an issue, but thats me, I am not a picky person. As for people ragging on Mossberg, personally i find it laughable that people think they are total junk...to each their own i guess. As for the 783, again if I was going to buy an entry level rifle, then the 783 would probably be it. The OP has said he is working with up to 1500$..in that case if one wants to spend that kind of money..buy a Tikka or a Browning. Hope the OP finds a rifle that works best for him.

Another vote for the Tikka Battue if you plan to hunt with iron sights instead of just having them for backup in case of a scope getting smashed. Those Battue sights look silly at first glance but they really work. Another option is to buy whatever sight-less bolt action you prefer and put a Williams, Lyman, or NECG receiver sight on it. You would need a gunsmith to install a front sight ramp. I much prefer peep sights to open sights. The T3X Arctic sights would be excellent but the rifle is way overpriced.

A while back there was a Winchester Model 70 F/W in the EE.
I recall it having sights on it also?
Dang morning I was heading out ice fishing.
Should of typed, "I'll take it".

Looked like a great rifle for hunting okaysions.

I decided I wanted something a little different than my normal rifles for a 308 so I got a Browning SS BLR lever gun.
Smooth as butter action and lighter than I expected. you might have a look at them.
I know its laminate not polymer stocked but the laminate is very durable.
