who hunts with a non hunting dog?

Just out of curiosity, who brings their pet dog out hunting, even if its NOT a trained hunting dog.


I was out for a walk today with mine and was wondering if odds of seeing a coyote would be higher with my dog beside me (too windy to actually call coyotes) but was thinking about the dogs effect on them, had a rifle on my shoulder because why not


I know if you bring an untrained dog out for rabbits it can help, just because it playing in the brush can inadvertently flush em out


btw my dog isnt running at large, but kept within 50 feet or so of me, wearing a blaze orange collar and an e-collar and is a 90lb black shepherd/lab mix.
 
When hunting birds I always have a dog with me ,no dog when hunting Caribou or moose .You never know what they will find.

I take my border collie husky mix in the wood " hunting" with me all the time. Its more of a 2-5km hike with my dog and a rifle on my shoulder. But that rarely get used lol.

I keep him no more then 50m from me. The most he is trained is i can whistle once and he will stop and a double whistle he comes back to me. Some times only with a little encouragement
 
My neighbour hunts pheasant and geese very successfully with his australian red healer. The dog is a natural hunter. It will point or flush upland and will retrieve all birds and never a problem. Its funny to see him haul big geese in as he isn't all that big

My daughters Shih Tzu is a great squirrel dog and has even helped me find downed grouse in the tall grass. Nice thing is she never ranges too far out and doesn't chew up the birds or squirrels. Laugh2

That is an awesome picture! Too bad those buggars are protected in Ontario (I mean the squirrel, not the huntin’ beast ;) )

not allowed to hunt were i live with a dog cause the laws are an ass
unless its for wildfowl
which isnt hunting as its retrieving

my rottweiler hunted with me many times. He came along on all the hunts as a pup and by 3 he was able to remain calm and cool right beside me while deer hunting in my ambush spot. I've posted pics of him in the past with the deer we have harvested together.
Sadly he passed at the age of 10 , a few weeks before christmas. I'm still not right about it.

Can't be without a good dog about the house so I have a female ckc registered VonRotherwood Rottweiler pup back east waiting to be old enough to have a friend fly her out to me.
Will train her the same way.

Well we have 4. The ####z zu bonded to me, the female american rotti worships my wife, and would be useless anyways. Two rescues, a aussie cattle dog, that would bark or herd everything, and a coy dog from a reserve thats ancient.

Unfortunately, the ####zu is my best option. Sad really. Not a lot of scraps or deer bones goes to waste.
 
Pretty much any dog can be used to chase deer. They need to be licensed in Ontario. One camp near us had the most motley looking collection of mutts ever, they put bells on them because they would not bark or howl on the chase. Another camp used two Springer's same thing, they had bells on them.
For a while, we used two black labs and a hound. The labs would bark, but they were so damned fast it was like skeet shooting for deer, plus they were constantly getting lost.
They best for us were beagles. Deer would put on a burst of speed, then just lope along. Often shots were walking, or standing.
