What rifle caliber would you prefer for large game?

Browning Abolt in .300 Win Mag
Winchester Model 70 .30-06

I reload for both above, so ammo cost is a non-issue.

The 06 has brought down more moose then other calibers. Although the 300WSM, 300WM and 7mm RM has brought down moose and deer as well. For deer the 30-30, 30-06, 270, 243, 7mm RM, 12 gauge slugs and buckshot and 20 gauge slugs. Caribou with 300 WM and 300 WSM. Elk with the 06. Bear 300 WSM. A few other calibers have been used as well. It good to study ballistic charts but actual field work gives the best feedback as to what can be done with a given rifle or shotgun.

For me the 3006 can and does every thing as far as hunting big game goes,it is also able to deal with anything else I may encounter. I do however carry my 4570 or 9.3x62 at work.

270 for elk?

Randy Newberg frequently uses a 7mm08 with 140gr nosler factory ammo for Elk. I don't see why a 270 wouldn't work just as well?

I've taken my 270 win moose hunting but we didn't see any bulls. Made quick work of the black bear I shot last season though, 130gr corelokt in one side and out the other, bear didn't go 30yds...

7 mm rem mag for moose and deer
30-06 pump for moose and deer in the brush
270 for deer and moose
I reload for all three so I switch ammo for what I am hunting

I believe there may have been a bit of cheekyness in that post.

Who is Randy Newberg?

Who is Randy Newberg?

A TV hunting celebrity of sorts. You can check him out on YouTube, he's got a podcast too. Big time elk hunter, but hunts most other stuff too. Basically all of his hunting is self guided public land hunting, which is nice.

I've used a .280 Remington as my primary rifle for 25-odd years. It does everything I need. I am a handloader, but factory ammo is not terribly scarce so I don't consider that a factor.

I'm presently thinning my herd, and the .280 will be the larger-game rifle I will keep. I also have a .308, .30-06, .300 H&H, .257 Roberts that will be going.
I will keep a few .250 Savages and .30-30's and the .280.
I have two, a Browning A-Bolt and a Rem 700 BDL and may keep them both.

I don’t have a go-to rifle/cartridge, however if did, it would be a 300 H&H in a bolt action Mauser.

Love my 25-06, 280 and 300rcm. I reload for all 3 so cost of ammo is of no concern.
If I had to pick one it'd probably be the 300rcm simply do to the slight power advantage.
