What magnification are you using for rimfire at 50 yards?

Fixed 4X on my main bush hunting bolt rifle. 4X has been plenty for a few long shots on grouse and rabbits. Like most bush shots, I am in the 10 to 25 metre range, but this combo has made several much longer headshots on grouse, around the 60 to 70 metre range. I feel the optic's clarity is more important than its magnification.

My 10/22 has a Burris Fastfire 2 red dot. I feel comfortable using the red dot out to 50 metres. Beyond that I can't get a clean bead on the head.
 
2x-7x and 3x-9x are my most common rim fire scopes. You can shoot small groups with a 2 power if your target is suitable for that magnification.
 
USBR 50, minimum 36X, I run weaver t36 on all the target rifles that count, but I am going to go up to 45x fixed power scopes as mirage from barrel heat is pretty much non existent. I wouldn't want to go any lower then 36x for the unlimited 100 yard target, holding for conditions is more important then aiming per say , but being able to pick a spot to hold to dope the wind is important
 
I used a 2-7 at 50 and 100. More than enough to be pin point accurate. I just moved up to a 4-16 Diamondback Tactical becauae it has the same EBR 2C reticle as my Razor HD2. I shoot it at 300 yards now for long range practice. A 22 at 300 is something to think about. Super fun and challenging.

Why are some guys using more scope power than you need for 2000 yards at 50 yards? What's the advantage with a 22 at 50 yards?

USBR x ring is the size of a pin, splitting hairs and dropping the bullets on a particular spot on the target is easier with more magnification then with less, and when we're spending close to $20 a box of 50 rounds of ammo we don't settle for good enough

What ammo do you guys run? I've tested alot and have the best luck with CCI stadard velocity. I have some Green Tag I havnt tried yet as well. It was like $25 I think lol.

eley match, lapua center x and eley tennex pretty much in that order, I cannot get the tennex to shoot in either of my 3 high end .22 benchrest rifles no matter where I set the tuner. If you have a rifle that will consistently shoot in the high 240's on the USBR target at 50 meters with cheap ammo I'd be interested in buying it........

Longboat, Green tag is in a box of 100 is it not? I use either Midas($20.00 per 50) or Centre X($14.00 per 50) and you would be severely handicapped using magnification below 24x on a typical rimfire BR target.

I have 2 scopes I use for BR, one is a fixed 35x and the other is a 10-50x. For hunting squirrels I use a 2-7.

The X dot on this target is approx. .090” in diameter.

So my pale of 1400 Remington rounds for 79.99 won’t do? Lol
 
Mostly just into squirrel hunting and plinking. One rifle has a 3-9x32, the other an old 3/4" tube fixed 6x. I find 4x is the sweet spot for my activities.
 
CZ 455 Lux wears a Leupold FX Rimfire fixed 4x and I’ll be putting a Nikon 2-7 or 3-9 on my Magnum Research MLR1722. I don’t hunt with these but I like the lower magnifications as I enjoy shooting offhand and speed shooting steel plates. I might build a heavy bench rifmire with more magnification but both of these guns shoot great at 50 yards so I don’t feel like I’m missing much. Will also probably put together a 10/22 shorty clone with a red dot this year.

Leupold VX-1 2-7 rimfire on a CZ455. Good for plinking and shooting some good groups, higher magnification would be nice for serious targeting shooting. Although the fine duplex in the rim fire scope really helps!

More seriously , shooting for group or score from benchrest need some serious magnification.

All of my best groups came from 6-18 , 6-24 , 36 or 10-50 magnification scopes.

All of them were wearing fine crosshair and td reticle.

I also use one or two for load development for my hunting rifles.

While shooting for group size , impact point is set about one inch over aiming point ( in my case at least ).

This old thread that was begun in late 2015 and revived four days ago with the post quoted above was concerned with target shooting from the bench at 50 yards with a rimfire. This would not appear to include plinking. A lot of shooters say that 2-7 or 3-9 is plenty for shooting great targets at that distance. Others say that to more closely achieve the full potential of a rifle more magnification is needed, with some of them putting 24X scopes or more on their rifles. Perhaps it all depends on the rifle in question and how small the shooter wants the groups to be.
 
For squirrel hunting I take headshots only. I have three 22's dedicated for that. A cz 452 ultra lux with open sights for ambushing or sneaking up really close..... A 452 scout with a 2-7 for when I do a bit more walking around and can take some mid range shots. And there is a 452 American with a nice vortex diamond back 6-24 FFP mrad that I love for those long range (80 - 120 yards) head shots.

A Sightron fixed 36x on the Krico 330s I picked up from guess who?
A Mueller 8-32x on a much modified CZ455 Varmint.
A Bushnell Elite 6-24x on a modified Marlin 70.
